5.03 Beta Version Available

It looks like we have a new Beta build available. I'll jump on it tonight when I get home from work.

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=10451

Changes made from version 4.70 to 5.03:
Added Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK support. See the Connect IQ 1.3.0 SDK for a list of new features.
Various bug fixes and stability improvements.
  • Seems like there's some confusion about the End Of Life (EOL) mentioned earlier in the thread.

The link is about how long Garmin plans on updating the Connect IQ SDK (2 years) not the firmware of the devices. There will be some products that are released early in the cycle that might not be able to take advantage of new features of an updated CIQ version, but that doesn't mean the device itself is orphaned.

The 4.7 firmware version that was just announced is adding pace from foot pod while outdoors to the 235 which was only on higher end models before so there is still more than just critical bug fixes being done on this device.
  • Sleep tracking is pretty much broken garbage.
    With that, I agree.

No notification when hitting step goals is ludicrous. Again, why have this functionality if you're not going to notify the user of hitting their goal?
As I've replied in the other thread, the goal is used by Garmin Connect for a number of things – determining the presentation of each bar in the Steps chart, determining the length of the user's goal streak, etc. I don't think it is necessary for an activity tracker to advise the user the moment he/she reaches the daily step goal; being able to see it on review some time later, either on the watch face or (better still) in where the tracked data is meant to be reviewed – i.e. Garmin Connect Mobile app or Garmin Connect online – is sufficient if the user wants to know.

Not being able to add custom activities is nonsense.
I disagree. Inasmuch as it would only be of benefit to me as a product owner and user to get Garmin to include more features and more flexibility, I've worked for long enough in industry to understand why it is both sensible and justifiable (and hence right, commercially speaking) for vendors to limit features, flexibility, extensibility, future-proofness, etc. when they don't just have one model at one price point to sell in the market.

(User-pays is a commonly accepted approach to things in Australia. Want more? Pay more, then. Nobody is discriminated for being richer or poorer, but only their willingness to part with money and spend in the name of consumerism.)

I understand that you don't feel as though Garmin "owes" us this stuff, but why include things like sleep tracking and step goal tracking if they're going to put in such weak implementations of those features compared to *any* competing product? It makes them look bad for the price they're charging.
I had (and used) a TomTom Spark Cardio+Music for several weeks before returning it for a refund, and ended up buying a Garmin Forerunner 235 in its stead. The two cost me effectively the same amount of money ($11 or 3.3% difference, after the respective discounts offered), and I think it is fair to say the SC+M is a direct competitor to the FR235. My opinion, from first-hand user experience, is that sleep tracking is at least equally as poor –*if not outright poorer – on the SC+M, and the step counting on it is so far off the mark that as a function it is worthless irrespective of goal-setting. (It also did not have any alerts for reaching a goal, until a firmware released months after I returned it.)

Therefore, I must disagree with your statement about how Garmin's implementation in the FR235 fares against *any* competing product.

    Some quick feedback:

HR pickup much improved compared to 4.6 (I never used 4.7)
Sampling rate seems to be unchanged.
A couple of times I have put on a HR strap and the watch switched to "Other" profile although not always.
I did an indoor bike session and the OHR looked fairly accurate.
RHR is still all over the place still. It currently is giving me a RHR of 50, but the lowest reading is 53?
I'm still getting the odd erroneous OHR spike.
Surely the developers can provide a bit more detail instead of:

◦Various bug fixes and stability improvements.

Would be nice to know what is improved.
  • Weird characters when displaying Google Calendar notifications

    Hi all,
I tried flashing 5.03 beta firmware and using it for a couple of days. No technical issues at all, but when I get notifications from Google Calendar I get weird characters (small rectangles, like []) before and after the appointment's description.

I reverted back to the included 4.70 firmware, but the issue is still there.

Is it a 4.70 issue as well (I was using 4.60 when I flashed 5.03 beta)? Should I open another thread or should I stick with the existing 5.03 beta and 4.70 threads?

I have also switched back to English locale (I was using Italian), and my FR235 is connected to an Android phone (OnePlus One with the stock 13.1 CyanogenOS).

Thanks for any help and/or recommendation.

There is an existing thread. I posted there and support reached out to me. I gave them some of my device info... Haven't heard back but they are aware.

  • FWIW.. Here is my feedback on the 5.03 Beta.

I jumped straight to the 5.03 Beta on 6/20 from version 4.60. My FR235 is not experiencing any issues with this beta at all. Since installing, I have been on three runs and six gym workouts (recorded as "Other").

I too am seeing a greatly improved HR pickup when starting an activity. It now typically locks onto my heart rate within 10 to 20 seconds whereas with 4.60 it was taking 2, 3, or sometimes 5+ minutes. In addition to my actual activities, I've been testing this several times throughout the day. Each time I would start from the watch face checking first to see that the HR sensor lights were off, and then go into an activity to see how quickly it would lock onto my heart rate. Each time the lock was refreshingly quick.

The heart rate sampling seems to be about the same as 4.6 which I'm happy with.

I am not seeing any issues with cadence lock. This was a big issue for me with some of the earlier software versions.

All Connect IQ items are functioning well under the new SDK version 1.3.0 that is part of this beta.
Widgets: Activity Tracking, Heart Rate, Weather, AccuWeather MinuteCast, Sun & Moon, Controls, and Notifications
    Watch Faces: Mechano, SR6
Apps: Hike, Stopwatch + Timer, Find My Car

I am not seeing the issue some have reported with notification texts being scrambled.. But I'm also not using Google Calendar or Whatsapp. I do have my device set to report notifications from Text Messages, Incoming Calls, Google Mail, IBM Verse (work email and calendar), Strava, Facebook, Fox News, and Voice Mail. All of the notifications from these apps are functioning normally.

    iOS app - connect iq

Anyone having problems accessing setting of any connect iq apps in iOS mobile app? None of the apps I have installed can access their settings under 5.03b installed on the device. Worked fine with 4.7......

It's a known problem and has been reported to Garmin. For now you can't change CIQ settings from Garmin Connect Mobile, but I was able to do it with Garmin Express (I have a 230 and the same thing happens with it)

Great! Thanks for the info... I'll give Garmin express on my PC a try.
  • I've done two runs with the new beta firmware, and so far so good. I unfortunately only had one treadmill run with v4.70, so it's hard to tell what was introduced in the beta version vs v4.70.

I agree with the others that the heart rate lock seems to be much faster now. Just sitting here, I'm able to get a lock in a few seconds, where before it would have taken minutes. The resting heart rate is still questionable, but my "low" and "RHR" numbers are more in sync than they were. My low is currently 46, and my RHR is 48. Before the update, the gap would often be huge between the two.

Going in and out of the custom watch face seems to be slower. A minor inconvenience.

I've had no issues with notifications or with the calendar.

I have another short run scheduled for tonight followed by a long run tomorrow. I'll post back if I have any additional findings.
