235 and swimming

I recently did a swim in my pool with my 235, using the "other" activity profile. My pool is about 43 feet long, and I did 50 lengths in about 17 minutes. This works out to about 4 tenths of a mile. The 235 recorded the swim as a little over a mile at a speed of almost 4 miles per hour. Why do you think the watch recorded a distance of over twice the actual distance? I'll try to link the activity. Apparently the watch though I swam out of my pool and across route 99.

  • This looks really good.
However I just tested it, admittedly in a small pool and it didn't recognise any lengths.

Was a little confused about how to stop/start. The right button changed screen from white to black - which is running and which is paused?

Or am I missing something obvious? Really want this app to work, it sounds great.

    Thanks
  • hi,
my bad, i should have probably documented better how it works. i will improve the documentation. :)
    black screen means paused.
white screen means time is running.
length detection is based on heading: when you finish one length and then you turn back, the app will trigger a length. it might take a couple of seconds.
length detection is deactivated during the first 10 seconds of every length, to avoid that lengths are triggered when you are taking a rest and maybe the heading could oscillate.
if you plan to rest for more than 10 seconds, it is advisable to pause the activity: screen will get black again.
you can trigger intervals with back button.
one last thing: whenever you press stop or pause, if length duration is longer than 10secs, it will count a length (even if the heading did not detected it). this is to avoid that you have to swim back for a couple of seconds to trigger the last length.

    i think that is it.

BTW, you can try it at home :) just walk from wall to wall, remember it has to take longer than 10secs! :D

i will add this info to the docu.
by the way, i would be grateful if further discussion takes place here:

FR230 users might not see a post in this forum. this way all the info is in just one place
  • Thanks. That makes more sense. It was a small pool and perhaps a length was under 10 seconds.
Will try again on next proper swim.
I wasn't aware of that page but will use that in future.

    Thanks
  • If you know the length of the pool why not use an app for the 235 like "Pool Swim" by daniel27? Just input the length and it'll keep lap count, stroke count, HR, etc. Works great for me. https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/f134a024-6ee4-47d3-8aec-3a397e3c9733
  • Could it be a situation in free style where the watch tracks distance for your arm which moves at a different distance to your body? For example, if you walk while doing arm circles, does it count for more distance compared to how far you have walked(because of the back motion)?
