Do I pollute Run data by recording a walk?

What happens if I record an activity as Run but I am actually just walking. When done, I edit that activity and change the Activity Type to Walking in Connect IQ. Will this mess up my running stats (ie average Run cadence, stride, speed ... etc) or will my Run data exclude the walking data because I changed the activity type.

  • I thought all averages were only per run, unless there are some reports in Garmin Connect for this. If it's in Garmin connect then the data should get fixed when you change an activity. I've seen this on the activities per month view where my walks show ever if they were recorded as a run then changed.

Not averages. If your request a report that pertain to averages across multiple activities, a new database query (filtered by activity type) will be made.

However, it may mess up your VO2Max for running (or personal records for running, but you get the opportunity to vet and reject those).
  • If you are concerned, you could just record an outdoor walk as a walk right on the watch. This app allows recording as a Hike or a Walk.

Or just record it as "other" and change the description in GC?
  • Thanks guys! All great advice. I forgot about VO2 ... and keep forgetting that Other does GPS (I currently have it turned off & use it for swimming laps inside). I never used to "walk" too much, but since I got the watch and began a daily 10,000+ step goal, I had to start so I could reach my goal on non-running days. I haven't recorded it yet, but plan to start. I will definitely d-load the hiking app - it looks great!

  • Similar question, is it possible to lend the watch to someone else to try out for a run without stuffing up stats like vo2 max and race predictor?
  • I'm sure you can deregister your watch from your Garmin Connect account, then reset the device to factory defaults, and lend it to a friend to enter his/her physical stats into the user profile and/or sync with his/her own Garmin Connect account, it won't mess up your VO2Max stats/history that is in your Garmin Connect account.

After the watch is returned to you, reset it to factory defaults again, re-register it against your Garmin Connect account, then go out and do another qualifying run to establish a ‘new’ VO2Max value on the watch. The race predictor uses VO2Max as the basis for its calculations, so that'll fix those too.
