active calories way too high!?

I "upgraded" from the vivofit2 to the 235 and I'm seeing crazy high calories with the HR monitor turned on... Below are two examples... I have plenty more...

On 5/5 I used my vivofit and rhythm+ hrm (only when doing an activity) to record steps and a 30 min p90x3 yoga activity. I registered 12K steps and was given 279 active calories for that. I was given 178 calories for the 36 min yoga session. That gave me a total of 2462 calories for the day. That is what I'm used to seeing.

On 5/29, I used my 235 with the HRM turned on. I registered 13k steps and was given credit for 3993 active calories! I did a 33 min p90x3 "the challenge" session which is pullups and pushups and was given credit for 158 calories (slightly low). The total for the day is 5798 calories!

The active calorie and total counts since using the 235 are crazy high! The amount being synced to MFP is another topic all together...

  • getting better today

So, some good news today. I reset the watch to factory settings and set it up again the same exact way as I'd done before. I've had this watch less than 2 weeks so I'm not sure how it got so messed up... I'm running "stock" today with no connect iq apps. The only thing I had added was the strava suffer score (I use premium too) and a new watch face. I'll leave those off for today and put it on tomorrow to see if it starts acting up. GPS run today worked well and the calorie count for my steps are in line with what I would expect given my experience with the vivofit1 and vivofit2. I'm assuming that the active calories will be slightly higher or lower because of using HR data too but I couldn't imagine how it was calculating before the factory reset.

Wish there was some way to go back and edit those previous days so my reports and MFP sync won't be so messed up. Speaking of which... the MFP calories for activities are showing up correctly now... but steps are now negative.

For example on CG I have 416 for running and 242 for steps. However, on MFP I see 416 for running and -40 for steps? A bit odd...

  • I spoke too soon... yesterday I was working on the default clock face and it seemed to be wroking correctly. In the afternoon I changed it to ActiFace and last night and today I had higher than expected active calories. I just changed it to GearMin to see if that matters...

Could the clock face really cause a problem like this? I thought it was just displaying data... not recording it!?

I just called support (again) and they say it's accurate (according to tier 2). I don't know how it's possible.

I brought up many days for examples and even a day where I had HRM on from the time I woke up till 11am. I literally sat on the couch all day watching tv and got about 4,000 steps and it gave me credit for 1700 caloires! When I saw the high reading I turned off HRM and the calorie count stopped increasing. I was literally sitting around all day.

I have been using both acti face and gear min as I like all the data on one watch face. For months I've been getting high calorie burns. For around a week I've switched to default and all my burns seems reasonable. I'm not sure if just a coincidence as don't wanna mess things up by going back to acti face or gearmin. I'll stick with the default and have reasonable burns.

I used no watch face except for the default one, and i still get the crazy active calories, so i guess its not related to any watch faces.
  • I mentioned the problems I was having in an Amazon review for the vivoactive hr. Garmin replied that the latest software update fixed the issue with calories. Has anyone on this thread seen an improvement?

    Nope...

    June 22nd. (14387 steps)
Ran 4 miles 498 calories (reasonable).
Walked 3.88 mi 1824 calories (unreasonable)
Total calories for the day... 3981 or 2322 active calories.

    June 23rd (6693 steps)
    "rest day"
Walked 3.07mi for 924 active calories.
2583 total calories for the day.

June 24th (12158 steps so far... as this is today)
Ran 4 miles 455 calories (reasonable)
Walked 2.68 miles 807 calories (unreasonable)

I've gone from frustrated and pissed off (called support many times) to pretty much given up on it. Waiting for class action so I can join. ;)
  • But wait! There's more!

This is me at the firefly music festival... It was a lot of walking but my wife wasn't feeling well so most of the time we sat on a blanket, stood in place or at a table so I could drink beer... Not a ton of dancing but we were certainly "active"...

    Is this reasonable calorie burn?

    High Calorie Count

I just bought the garmin 235 and when I took it off before bed and woke up it showed I did 700 calories. Is this because the HR monitor was on during the night? It doesn't make sense that I did that many calories when I didn't even have it on is there a fix for this??
  • Those are Base Metobolic Rate (BMR) calories, the ones you burn by being alive. The watch doesn't need to be worn to calculate those - this is normal.
