HR slow/not starting on FR235 Activity

Hi,

Have noticed of late that it can take up to 3 minutes for the HR to start on FR235. Today after waiting 4 minutes I power cycled the watch which allowed it to activate HR within a few seconds.

Anyone else having this issue? Anyone aware of a fix?

Thanks

I noticed this too. It used to get my heart rate in just a few seconds when starting a new activity. Now it can take several minutes. If I go to the heart rate screen and wait for a lock before starting the activity it's okay. But I didn't used to have to do that.

I've found that since the latest firmware upgrade, it can sometimes take a while to get an HR lock when starting a run. Not 2-3 minutes though, maybe 30 seconds and not all the time, only sometimes.
  • I find that going to the HR widget and getting a lock (heart stops flashing) before starting your activity is the fastest - usually under 30 seconds. I HAVE HEARD (don't quote me) ... That in earlier FW versions, when it seemed that you were getting a HR almost immediately within your activity, you were actually getting the 'guessed estimate' value that you can see on the widget when the heart icon is still flashing (looking for your HR) which eventually changed to your actual HR once it locked on. This changed in later FW versions, where you now do not see any HR at all until it locks on to your actual HR. Not 100% sure about that, but it makes sense in my case.

  • Same thing for me. Had a race yesterday, put on the 235, never waited for the HR icon to go solid(no time). Ran 30 minutes to the start, still no HR showing. Switched it off then back on and got a lock about 2 mins before the gun went off.

Happened again today, never got the HR icon to go solid, ran for 50 mins with no HR.

I sometimes have to wait a while, more than 10 minutes to get a solid HR icon, it's a real pain if you don't wear the 235 like me.

Simply cannot get a HR lock even though I can see the normal fitness HR is working by checking my heart rate over the past 4 hours function. I think this is pretty unacceptable.
  • Can you get your HR to lock (stop blinking) on the "past 4 hours function" (the HR widget). Mine usually takes less than 30 seconds ... if you can, you should then be good to go to start a run with a decent HR recording. I always do this before every run and this works for me every time.

You're doing well if it's only 3 minutes. I tested my wife's new 235 against my tried and true 910XT. Had both of them on for a while prior to my jog to set baselines. The 235 was in activity tracking mode... HR/Steps/etc... I had the 910 on my left wrist and the 235 on my right. I've got a hill to climb to start my jog. I normally walk it to make sure my devices are ready, and usually hit in the low 100's/bpm once I start the jog. While climbing the hill, I went into Run mode on the 235 and noticed the HR was no longer showing and the heart was flashing. So I started my jog assuming it would connect soon - the GPS quickly had acquired the satellites and everything seemed fine, minus a heart rate display. At about .5 mile, I noticed that it wasn't reading my HR. I swapped wrists, thinking that it just wasn't reading my pulse on the run. After another 1/4 mile, still nothing. I rotated the watch - nothing. I put it back on the right wrist - still nothing. So a little over a mile in, I stopped and did a power cycle. Luckily it offered me the choice of resuming, upon powering up which I chose. It didn't take long for it to start displaying my HR and all was fine.

The following weekend, my wife and I went for jogs. She was wearing the 235 prior to our runs and it was showing HR. But the same thing happened both times upon putting it into run mode, while climbing the hill to our start point. So we power cycled and seconds later it started showing the HR.

Just a note - the LED's were on during this, and it was not recording HR. So it wasn't just that it wasn't showing the HR on the display, but it wasn't recording it either. From all I could see, all of the the other metrics worked fine (the GPS being the primary one).

It doesn't make sense that it displays HR before going into Run mode, and then it quits that functionality upon selecting Run mode, without a power cycle.

I usually walk about one kilometre to the spot where I start most of my runs, and I'm of the habit of prepping my FR235 in Run mode once I leave my building's front door. These days my FR235 usually starts showing my current HR in the HR Zone Gauge data screen – before I start the timer – about halfway there, so the optical HRM takes three to five minutes to lock on. (It's quicker to lock on when I'm not walking and my heart rate is not rapidly increasing from rest.)

Following that procedure, my watch hasn't failed to track my HR for any runs yet, although for one run it seemed to under-reporting my HR by 20 or so BPM for the first ten minutes, before suddenly jumping 20 BPM to what I expect my HR to be at that pace, and then perform normally for the remainder of that run.
