Not finding HR at start of run

Had the 235 for about a week, such an improvement over the 620. Overall very happy with it, but there's a couple of things I'm a bit concerned about.

In order to save battery life I've switched it off when not in use, when I've switched it back on in the run mode it hasn't found my HR, turned it off and back on and it was fine. This has happened twice.

Decided just to leave it on now. On today's run there was no HR, turned it off and on, still nothing. Started my run, after about 3-4 minutes, HR appeared and was accurate.

Software is up to date.

Is this normal? Just a bug?
  • With battery life of several weeks without GPS,
How did you figure that? According to the Specs tab on the FR235's product page on the the Garmin web site,

Battery life
11 hours training, 9 days watch + activity tracking + notifications + heart rate

which roughly corresponds to what I've observed on my watch; running for even two weeks without a recharge is out of the question, let alone three or more weeks. Are you able to get several weeks of battery life on a single charge of your FR235?

With battery life of several weeks without GPS, I'm not sure why you'd be concerned enough to turn it off between runs anyway

That's the same thing people said when the 620 came out - which I believe was Garmin's first watch that went into low power mode when not recording an activity.

Then about eight months later some people started reporting that the battery life of their 620s was declining quickly, sometimes to half of what it was when new. Invariably, these were people who'd left their 620s on in low power mode most of the time. Meanwhile, after over two years and three and a half marathon training cycles - always turning it off after the completion of an activity - the battery life in my 620 is around 70% of what it was new.

Charging cycles are charging cycles. "Low power" isn't "no power."
