Can I use other functions during an activity?

Just got my FR230 two days ago and I love it.

I went for a run yesterday and wanted to check the date/time during the run, looked like there's no way to do it unless I paused the activity. My watch was not locked.

All, is it possible to use other functions during an activity? Another example, I want to know how many steps I have had during my run without pausing the current activity.
  • You can add the clock under menu: activity settings: data screens: clock

sometimes you can add metrics through adding data fields as well (I think time might even be there), but I don't think step count is.

Yes, it is, billed as ‘Time of Day’ (under Other Fields).

You can use ‘Back to Start’ navigation during a GPS-tracked activity.

No, and even if you pause the current activity but without terminating it, your watch still won't tell you how many steps you've added so far from the run alone (you'll have to wait until the activity is completed and saved, and the activity uploaded to Garmin Connect), or your current daily step total for that matter.

Thanks ASmugDill and CHUNKYWIZARD, you guys are awesome! I added 'Time of Day' as the fourth data field and I'm quite happy with it.

Could you elaborate 'Back to Start' navigation? How can I use it?

I would strongly suggest that Garmin add it as a feature - view activity progress
  • Could you elaborate 'Back to Start' navigation?
It tells you your displacement from where you started the GPS-tracked activity. For example, if you press Start and run 300m due north, the Back-to-Start data screen will show 300m pointing south (i.e. behind you, on the watch's display if it's placed horizontally). If you then turn right and run 200m due east, then turn right again and run 300m due south, the Back-to-Start data screen will show 200m pointing west (to your right, on the watch's display).

    How can I use it?
Press-and-hold the Up button when you're tracking a Run, then select ‘Back to Start’ from the Options menu that comes up, to add the Back-to-Start data screen to that activity.

(...) the Back-to-Start data screen will show 300m pointing south (i.e. behind you, on the watch's display if it's placed horizontally). If you then turn right and run 200m due east, then turn right again and run 300m due south, the Back-to-Start data screen will show 200m pointing west (to your right, on the watch's display).

Just to be clear - the watch does not have a compass, so the back-to-start arrow is based on your current path direction. In other words, if you are running due North, stop, activate back-to-start, the arrow will point behind you; if you spin 180 deg and remain stopped, the arrow won't move; then if you start running due South, the arrow will point ahead. If you're moving, the arrow will make sense, if not, it won't.

Don't worry - when you really need this feature, you will get it to work, and it will get you back home. It's the same as on other FR-series products.

Thanks AsmugDill for your explanation, I installed dwMap to not get lost on my hike :)
