hrr heart rate zone setting changed by the watch

Former Member
Former Member
I followed the manual to set the hrr heart rate zone as
55-59
59-65
65-74
74-84
84-100
But after several running , the watch changed the zones to much higher %, do anyone know why?
Should i just keep on recorrect it?
Thx

No, but all I can conclude is that there is some sort of software defect, reproducible (on firmware v4.60, WHR 2.70, Garmin Connect Mobile app v3.6.0.12 running on iOS‑9.3.1, if any of that matters) by:
• Setting the HR Zones on the FR235 directly on the watch as you've detailed above
• Initiating a sync (using the Sync action in the Controls widget on the watch) with the Garmin Connect Mobile app
• Review Heart Rate Zones on watch ( from the watch face), which has curiously changed, to Based On=%HRR, MaxHR=188, RHR=51, Z5=86-100%, Z4=72-86%, Z3=59-72%, Z2=45-59% and Z1=31-45%, even though I did not so much as visit the User Settings page – let alone modify the values for Heart Rate Zones – under Device Settings in the app or in Garmin Connect online.
• Press and then to go back to the same ‘page’, and the Zones settings are then Based On=%HRR, MaxHR=188, RHR=51, Z5=84-100%, Z4=74-84%, Z3=65-74%, Z2=59-65% and Z1=55-59%.
• Repeat steps 2 to 4 above.

By the way, neither of those sets of numbers align with what I set in Garmin Connect online.

I'm also seeing a host of other defects, including:
• the percentages for each of the HR zones sometimes not changing when I switch from Based On %Max‑HR to Based on %HRR and vice versa on the watch; and
• after I switched to Based on BPM then go to edit Zone‑5 on the watch, I see something senseless such as

Set Zone
8
‑ 16 6
9
•

where obviously 166 is the current lower threshold of Zone‑5 in BPM, but the number picker control expects me to pick a percentage.

Should i just keep on recorrect it?
I don't think I can advise there, since somehow I cannot get the watch to agree with Garmin Connect now after syncing via the Garmin Connect Mobile app, even though I have gone into both to manually set the same numbers before syncing (to restore things to how they were before my experiments). It finally took syncing in Garmin Express to put things back.

Is it really a bug?

Thx ASmugDill.

I just wonder if the change of RHR zone %limit by the watch is somehow a more accurate estimation of your body status?

Or just a strange bug?

I searched in web but unable to find any info about it.

Happens again!!

my old HRR zone setting in watch, garmin connect in phone and web:
55-59
59-65
65-74
74-84
84-100

without any running, after two days, in the watch now becomes
65-68
68-73
73-80
80-88
88-100

but in the web of garmin connect is still the old setting!!

so STRANGE!!
Could anyone tell me why?

It is pretty annoying... I need to check and recheck whether the HRR zone settings been modified every time I sync the watch (no matter via BT or cable). Other issues include:

1. Rest HR can't sync with Connect Web & Connect App. It jumps up and down crazily after every sync (it turns to 255bpm in a couple occassions, Rest HR > Max HR)
2. Once you manually set up the Rest HR on the watch, the watch seems to re-calculate and change the range% of every zone automatically.
3. The sequence of widget changes as well after sync (sometime)

The reason I chose 235 is because of its build-in HR sensor, but this bug is actually ruining the usability of this device.

Please fix it ASAP, Garmin!!!

In ConnectIQ I see my defined heart rate zones and Max HR for running, cycling and generic. Since my MaxHR is lower for cycling than for running, the zones differ.

But in the watch, only one set of zones can be defined? Have I missed something or does it change to match the activity somehow?

calgot,

you can press the run button -> up arrow to choose the activity you wanted by pressing the run button again.

Then, press down arrow to change the setting of the selected activity e.g. set GPS to "off" for indoor running.

Yes, but the HR Zones and Max HR isn't in the activity-specific settings (where the GPS setting is), so it seem to be global for all sports. Which is a bad thing.

I thought maybe the strange behaviour that others are seeing is because they have configured different zones for different activities and that confuses the watch somewhere along the line.

different heart rate zones in garmin connect in the web

I have not tried yet.

you can see we can have two sets of heart rate zones in garmin connect in the web.
left one for others and one for running.

you can try and see if the two zonation differ in your watch after setting them differently from the web.

but I don't know if it works.

you can try and tell us!

Yes, I have three zones configured (running, cycling and 'secondary' which I assume is for other activities). It appears in both the Android App and on Garmin Connect.

However, on the watch I can only see one set of zones and it seems to apply globally, ie it's not under the activity specific settings like GPS. I have them configured as % Max HR, and the percentages are currently the same for running and cycling. But since my Max HR is different for running and cycling, the zone calculation becomes wrong when I'm biking (yea yea, I know it's a runners watch, but...)

And maybe those experiencing problems with their zones somehow got them mixed up - ie the watch uses another set of zones than what the user thinks is configured on the web/app.

It seems a bit confusing that you're allowed to define three sets of HR zones in the app, but the watch only uses one of them (hopefully the correct one).

calgot,

I have all activities with the same zone settings tried.

but the problem persists.

rather UNacceptable for a running watch!!
