Firmware Downgrades - feature request petition

OK, here we go again. Nearly every active thread at the moment complaining that something that worked earlier now doesn't work.
I've got my own battery issues that I cant be sure are hardware or software.

If you gave us the ability to install older firmwares we'd be able to a) confirm whether our issues are hardware or software b) maintain a working device whilst you fix it.

Also, what happened to releasing software as betas where people could try, feedback, and if necessery backout. There are a lot of helpful people on here who could actively assist in your developemtn and testing.

I know your response will be you want everyone on the same version as it makes support easier, but you've shown time and time again you aren't capable of fixing anything without breaking something else and people should have the right to use the firmware that works best for them.

It would also have saved me and you the time, hassle and cost of me sending my watch back to you for a fault that may be just a software issue.

If anyone else agrees with this request can you please add your comments to this thread.
  • Would be great, even though in general downgrades are usually no option the betas (which allow you to go back to the previous) show it IS possible...

But yeah, especially with the random effects module implemented in the garmin releases it would be VERY nice to be able to go to a version which actually works for you.

Then again, I guess they will just release a few more watches instead :/ (*Frustration mode off*)
  • Firmware Downgrades - Yes, this would be very nice!!!!
  • I concur

At least make the upgrade optional.
  • Either allow downgrades or have betas. It's unfortunate that Garmin has created an environment where people are scared to install updates.

Isn't it optional? I believe there is a "Dismiss" option for the software update notification.

    There is!

Ultimately downgrading isn't a great idea going forward as you can't pick and choose what changes in each release you might want to get.

For instance the latest one addresses:
Changes made from version 4.30 to 4.60:

Improved the reliability of Bluetooth smartphone connections.
Fixed an issue in which VO2 Max was not being uploaded to Garmin Connect.

So if you went back you would have to "put up" with these issues.

Another issue with downgrading is that resets your device back to factory defaults.

That may be, but it's more about the 'crap, the device worked perfectly fine and this update has screwed everything up for me'. I prefer having to factory reset and have a working device as opposed to not being able to properly use it and crossing your fingers for a next update and then crossing them again hoping it doesn't screw other things up.

And you don't know what an update will do until you tried, so I would like to be able to actually test/try them

What will happen if I choose "Dismiss"? Do I still get a chance to install the update later?
This thing becomes so fragile, I did not dare to try.
  • Mine gives me the option to choose "Remind Me".
