1 Mile Auto-Lap: First Mile Short?

Former Member

Hi,

I just went for my first run with my new 235 yesterday. It was great, except for one puzzling thing: although I had the Auto Lap setting on and set for 1 Mile, the first lap was marked only .73 miles in to the run. All the subsequent laps were correctly marked after exactly 1 mile.

Before I started my run, I opened the 'run' activity page on the 235 and walked around for a few minutes to let the watch aquire GPS and my HR. Once they were ready to go, I pressed the button to start the run.

I'm guessing the weird first lap distance is a result of including the distance I walked before I started the activity. Is that correct? If so, how should I start the run differently next time?

Thanks!
  • As far as I can tell you didn't do anything that should've affected measurement of the first mile. I'd do the same thing for a couple of more runs and if you get similar results put in a support ticket.

Maybe if you set that first run to public viewing in Garmin Connect and post a link here somebody might figure out what went wrong.

Do you think you could have, inadvertently, press the lap button (bottom right) at or around 0.73 miles? That would explain the data as your walk was not recorded and should not affect the splits...

You know what, I bet that's what happened! I remember paging through the data screens as I was turning on to the trail. I must have pressed the lap button accidentally with my index finger as I was pressing the down button with my thumb. Hopefully I can learn to grip the watch differently, but I bet this isn't the last time I do that!
  • I don't know. I've done that a couple of times with previous FW versions and while it did cut the current lap short it also created a 1 second lap for just that instance but carried on normally after that.

That's not really a good explanation of what I'm trying to say and I'm not going to try to find that one of the runs where I hit an accidental lap right now. This evening I'll hit a random lap while running to see if it still behaves that way or if it might be the same as what you got.

Edit: I stand corrected. I hit the lap button shortly after getting the mile 3 alert and the next auto lap mile didn't chime until I hit 4.12 miles overall so it looks like that might've been your issue.
