Interval Training setup

I want to setup a generic timed interval workout.
Basically just to give me a warning when it is time to start/stop the interval.

I want to use this for multiple distances though, so one day there may be 2 intervals, another day 5.

I see you can set an open warmup and cooldown, and you just press one of the buttons to stop/start the interval element of the run.
But I cannot see any option to have a flexible number of repeats on the intervals, so I'd need to calculate and change the number of repeats every run I do?

Is it possible to do flexible repeats, where you just press the button to move on to the cooldown?
Or do you just set it as a high number like 50 and again can you then move on to the cooldown by pressing the button without doing all 50 repeats?

I will have a play later and test this out but thought there must be so many people doing this I would ask.
Thanks
  • For repeated intervals you need to add a repetition and after you can define the number of repetitions with the +/- on the repetition box. Hope I understand your doubt correctly.
  • Hi,
Within Garmin connect I can see how to amend the no of repetitions, and then download it to the watch.

What I'd like to do is not have to set the no of repetitions at this point, and just do as many repetitions as I feel I want to, but still have the watch keep time or distance for me. I really want infinite repetitions until I've had enough, where I can press a button to say 'I'm done and I want to start the cooldown'

It seems that you can set a flexible warmup/cooldown, but not a flexible number of repetions, and this has to be set before downloading to the watch.

    Does that make sense?

    Thanks

Yeah, but don't think it's possible. Thought it might be as you can also set duration of warming up and cooling down to be determined by pressing the lap button... But repetitions can only be set by a fixed amount it seems.
  • Nope, not since Garmin removed the ability to edit workouts within the watch itself a few years ago.

Best (though it still sucks) is to open Garmin Connect in your phone's web browser, edit the workout on phone screen, then re-download / re-transfer the updated workout to your watch using the Garmin Connect Mobile app.
  • That's what Run/Walk alerts are for

That's easy. Just use the Run/Walk alerts for either of the Run activity profiles. (Other and Bike activity profiles do not offer the option.)
Is it possible to do flexible repeats,
    Yes.
where you just press the button to move on to the cooldown?
Not if you want a cool-down step that is managed by the watch. That shouldn't stop you from knowing when you have decided enough is enough, and start your cool-down during which you'll just ignore any alerts raised by the watch. If you want to keep an eye on the time or distance, you can always start cool-down in a lap of its own, and use the Lap Time or Lap Distance data fields to guide your decision as to when to stop the cool-down, without the watch raising a visible/audible/vibrating alert to get your attention.

Just do it without using a custom workout, and warm-up outside of the tracked Run activity (but during which time the watch will be prepped for the activity, so that it can get a lock on the GPS signal and your current heart rate), then press to start the intervals when you're ready.

If you must time and track the warm-up step of your workout, it's still doable, but the transition from warm-up to the first interval will take (a minimum of) fifteen button-presses – which is what it takes to pause the activity, toggle a preset alert, and resume the activity. Similarly, if you want to time and track the cool-down step of your workout without being disturbed by unwanted Run/Walk alerts, it'll take fifteen button-presses as you transition into cool-down.

Oh, and if you want each interval to be recorded as a separate split or lap, you're going to have to do it manually by pressing the button.
  • back button

I don't do formal intervals very often - but as a means of tracking intervals or cooldowns etc of any kind... the back button resets the 'lap' and works very well as SmugDill pointed out.

I used it just last night to sort of end my workout portion and enter cooldown pace. It allows for partial miles at workout/goal paces.

Also you could set the autolap to a shorter interval (say 1km or .25mile for instance) If you were ok with even distanced fast/slow repeats.
  • Thanks all.
Had a play last night setting 4 repeats but only doing 3 of them.
Pressing the lap button after 3 seemed to move me onto cooldown, which is fine, but the run also termainated a few moments later. I'm struggling to recall whether I pressed the lap button again to terminate it, or whether it treated me pressing it in the last interval stopped it.
Either way, a quick resume on the activity and it all worked fine.

I'm not too concerned about any warnings on the warmup/cooldowns, I just want the ability to do any length of run with any number of intervals and record the whole run with stats for the whole run, which it did fine. So that is good enough for me.

    Thanks
