Would you buy the 235 again?

Hi,
I currently own the 920xt and love it. But I was looking at the 235 simply because of the optical heart rate sensor.

My question is, is the optical heart rate sensor on the 235 as great as the HRM band and strap is on the 920? Are you 100% satisfied with it and would you buy it again?

Or would you wait for the next generation of optical sensor before buying ?

Thanks for your feedback.

  • Had 235, gave it to my better half, bought 230. MUCH better.

So what is the point of HRM if it's working 50% of the time and it doesn't work with intervals at all? Even with consistent pace difference between 5 or 10 beats can be A LOT if you're trying to run your max and know how long are you going to last with specific HR. For instance running 5BPM lower then beginning of zone 5 is my sweet spot and can do, let's say, 10K on that lvl. 5-6BPM up (lower 5th zone limit) and difference if huge. When conditions change (temperature, humidity, general feel for the day) HRM (not pace) helps me adapt.

Also 100% of the time you will wonder "is this the right HR or is it 5-10 up/down". Never wore a strap, got used to it instantly.

Now that the 24/7 heart rate monitoring is working better, i have no regrets. Last week, I had higher than normal work/life stress, wasn't sleeping enough and I was training way too hard (~10 miles and 2000 feet of elevation every day). This ultimately resulted in me catching a cold, the first cold i've had in a few years (since before i ever wore a heart rate monitor). For about 24 hours before I actually felt the symptoms, it totally blew me away to see that my heart rate jumped from low/mid 40's to mid/high 50's. I kept wondering "why is my heart rate 10 to 15 bpm higher than normal?". It sort of amazes me that your heart was will raise a red flag that you're getting sick. Now I see the OHR monitor as an important health tool, not just for running.

Exact same experience here. HR jumped by about 10 BPS a day before I got a nasty cold.

Interestingly it worked other way around as well.

Woke up... checked RHR and it was much closer to "normal" ... and yes, that was first indicator of me getting better even before I actually got better...
  • I have had mine a few days and already pondering returning it, so I doubt I would buy another unless a fix came about that made it actually synchronise with something, anything and also update, maybe give accurate heart rate information too.

I did have a Mio that did a very good job of a wrist HRM but then they did introduce this technology and sell it to others (Forerunner 225), but this did nothing else and was very hard to read, though the coloured LED was a great idea for the training zones. This watch might be great if it would just sync up and give me the data, having it perform so poorly out of the box is a real pain.

No. In my view it's not fit for purpose. My first one I had to send back due to PHR problems (it stuck at 79 after an upgrade, and after hours on the phone to support, still hadn't been resolved, so they sent me an RMA and then sent me a new one when they received mine back.

The second one, which I have now, the screen cracked. There was in impact (clearly I would know if there had been, since only I wear it). I think it's a problem for the 235. Trying to get figures from Garmin for how many have suffered this. They charge £85.16 for non-warranty exchange for cracked screen.

If you do buy one, get an aftermarket screen protector before you leave the house wearing it!
