Forerunner 235 often reboots several times after power on

I recently owned a Fenix 2 which, unfortunately, spontaneously rebooted during running and cycling activities quite frequently. After about ten months and a handful of calls to Garmin, whose only advice was to factory reset the device, I decided to return it to REI for something that I hoped would function properly.

Since I only run and cycle, I decided on a Forerunner 235 about a week ago. Since I tend to wear dress watches during the day, I don't use the FR235 when I'm not specifially performing an activity. To save battery, I simply turn it off when not in use. Unfortunately, I've noticed that when I power it back on, it usually reboots itself about three or five times before the time is shown on the screen. The number of times that it reboots at power-on is completely unpredictable. Sometimes it gets far enough into the boot sequence to "bleep" at me two or three of times, but other times, it simply shows the Garmin logo and then fades out and back on handful of times.

Before I return the 235 back to REI for a replacement, I thought I'd ask here to see if any other users have experienced the same behavior. If it's common, then I suppose I'll just keep the 235 and chalk it up to poor FFF.

For what it's worth, I've already performed a factory reset on the 235, and the firmware is currently on 4.20, GPS/3.00, Display/2.10, Bluetooth/2.20, WHR/2.60, CIQ/1.2.2

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

    Same problem here :(

I wear it everyday and I never let's it go off.

The good side is that it's 5 mins max then it all 100% functional again :)

Look forward to the repair batch :)

  • Don't turn it off when it's not in use, there a bug which *increase* battery drain if you do. The low power mode when it's a watch should mean you never have to turn if off

  • As mentioned there's a bug when the watch is off which causes battery drain, but that's a different issue.

No, this does not sound normal. I don't turn the watch off too often (every now and then I reboot it so to say, when there is (what seems to be a memory) issue with oine of the connect iq apps but it reboots just fine in those cases. It starts as you'd expect right the first time.

I'd check about an exchange as this does sound like an issue imo.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I just found a separate thread about the same issue here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?347562-Problem-with-turning-on!

After reading that thread, it does seem like it might be an inherent problem with the design. I may hold off on returning it until another firmware is released.
