Cycling VO2Max?

Is the Forerunner capable of calculating VO2Max for cycling? If not, why if the Edge is able to?
  • It isn't capable. The only reason is that Garmin don't enable it in this watch as it's a lower end watch and cycling VO2Max is considered a higher end function. You would need a Fenix3, a 920XT or an Edge to get cycling VO2Max

  • Bummer, I hate the fact that it's perfectly capable but they disable it by software.

Not sure that all edges report vo2 max without power meter. At least mine did not (on old FW, have not started new cycling season with new updated firmware yet)
I think you need power meter to get vo2 max estimation at least for 520, see description of 520 below

Since there is no power meter connectivity in 230, no vo2 max

    The quote I refer to
Reports cycling-specific VO2 max and recovery time when used with power and heart rate

PS that is just va guess, not an top expert opinion ;)
  • you are right, the lack of VO2Max is down to not having power meter capability, but again that is only software, the 230 supports ANT+ which is what it would use to connect to the power meter, so it could be made to support it. I guess the only limiting factor would be if there wasn't enough flash memory in the device to support the extra software needed but I think that would probably be minimal.

Still it's never going to happen as Garmin want to sell 920XTs, Fenix3's or the next big thing!

  • So I can expect the Forerunner (or Edge) won't be able to estimate power from HRM and cadence sensor?

you could try a CIQ data field such as https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/2e20bb58-e8de-474e-b200-c78d6110060f

you are not however going to get a cycling VO2 Max even if the device supports it without a real PM

Cheers, I'll give it a spin
