Optical HRM not working, device sluggish and battery drain since update

Since I've updated to 4.20, my HRM stopped working.
Also the device feels sluggish, when I click a button it takes over a second for it to respond.
Lastly, I've been experiencing battery drain.

All of this since the update. Anyone else experiencing the same?
  • Same issue, OHR doesn't always work. both of my runs today had no HR readings during activity. This is one of them: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1135656138

    I have WHR 2.60, 4.20.
  • Mine sometimes doesn't pick up my HR immediately when I turn it to activity mode. If it's showing the "--" for HR in the Run activity, I exit the activity and go to the HR widget and watch until it picks up a realistic reading and gives the solid heart. Usually when there's a "--" in the activity screen, the widget starts off reading somewhere in the 100s when it should be more like 60. It takes a while for it to get the 100s out of its system or something. It seems like the closer to my real HR that it was when I go to the widget, the faster it locks in (I assume the reason it always started off by guessing 72 previously). I wonder if now it is trying to start off with a guess based on my movement levels, leaving it thinking that I should have a HR in the 100s just because I was walking and stretching my arms while getting outside to run (faking it by motion into thinking I've actually started working out, when I really have not).

Garmin has received the reports or devices no longer tracking heart rate accurately/HR data missing from the beginning of the run. Our engineering team is investigating to determine the root cause, so that this can be resolved. I do apologize for the inconvenience, and as always we appreciate the feedback that has been provided.
  • I have the same issue.
Sometimes it takes about 30 seconds but sometimes it takes forever.
The 24 HRM is much better though.
  • Damn, I thought I might be a lucky one as I haven't seen this yet, but alas, I started yesterday's run and noticed no HR ... lasted about a minute. I didn't want to stop as I was racing my previous day's run. I kept watching for a HR and eventually I lifted the side of the watch to see if the sensors were lit up. As soon as I did that (they were lit up btw), the HR started. Probably a coincidence, but I'll try lift the sensors off the skin again next time this happens and see what happens ... maybe the sensors just needed to breathe ... ;)

  • I've just been on my first run since the update and also have this problem. There was no data showing on the HR screens during the run at all. But if I look at the HR widget it shows that it had been recording and coloured the history with red and orange for the parts with an elevated HR.

The HR also works absolutely fine when not doing an activity. It's only when out on a run etc that there is no HR shown on the screen.
  • I have no OHR at all. I haven't tried a run yet though.
Is it possible it's not the OHR but the green LED's that are the issue as I have no light on the OHR at all.

Same problem with my garmin 235 from Spain. Since the last update without heart rate. SAT in Spain dont answer the mails.
Garmin makes some sort of pre-test? it seems impossible that an update is launched with a problem that leaves the terminals without displaying the heart rate. It's incomprehensible.
  • Same issue here, and it's very persistent. Doesn't Garmin's dev team test these things before they release them?
  • In my case I had to reboot the watch before starting my last two workouts in order to have HR. And in one of them I had a spike of 186 (my max HR is about 174). Never had this kind of problems with the previous firmware. I wish we could downgrade the firmware.
