Pace Alert - Average Pace?

In the 235 I am trying to understand the Alert functionality, specifically when you set the High Pace Alert. It looks to me that it is doing it on the average pace of the entire run which is kind of odd. I had a 620 before and the same option was done using the current pace which is really useful because the feedback is almost immediate.

Please let me know if my appreciation is correct or If I am missing any other setup.

from my experience the alerts use current pace.

...either that or i have a really terrible understanding of both my pacing and how the watch works which is entirely possible.
  • Pretty sure it's the average pace for the current lap.
  • Still confused

    Thanks everyone for your input.

Have you seen it working the pace alert in the 235? So far I have not seen any alert.
I have set the fast alert in 9min/mile. I have done the entire run with average pace below 9min/mile, with several laps below that pace but alerts don't show up.

If it is working for somebody please let me know how was the set up done.

when you say below 9min/mile do you mean faster or slower?

and yes the pace alerts work for me
  • There's a bug in early firmwares where this doesn't work. Make sure you are on the latest firmware

    I meant faster.

    I am in version 4.10
  • Pace alerts for custom workouts are triggered by Lap Pace, and require firmware v4.10

No, the pace alerts on the FR235 are not triggered by the average pace of the entire (Run) workout breaching the specified thresholds.

    No, it's not that either.

Just so I can be certain how it works, earlier today I set up a custom workout with three repetitions of a Run (until Lap button is pressed) step, for which an intensity target based on Pace is set (between 5'25" and 5'55"). I then set up a Data Screen showing the three metrics of (current) Pace, Average Pace and Lap Pace, and went for a run. From the alerts on the screen, which show the value that is outside of the thresholds, along with a single word ‘Fast’ or ‘Slow’ to describe in which way the thresholds are breached (although I'd think that ‘Too Fast’ or ‘Too Slow’ would make more sense), I could see it is the Lap Pace value that triggers the alerts.

To be doubly sure, after a first lap which was deliberately too fast, I then started a second lap running slow so that:
    • Average Pace is brought back between the thresholds (and close to the Slow threshold); while
    • Lap Pace was way too slow by a fair bit; and then sped up so that
    • current Pace was too fast.

In that scenario, I kept getting (too) Slow alerts until Lap Pace was brought back between the thresholds.

Pretty sure it's the average pace for the current lap.
    Yes, you are correct.

Have you seen it working the pace alert in the 235?
    Yes.
So far I have not seen any alert.

There's a bug in early firmwares where this doesn't work. Make sure you are on the latest firmware
(For gpardo123's benefit) More specifically, in firmware version 3.30 (and I guess earlier versions, too) a defect existed such that alerts for breaching intensity targets (including pace) during custom workouts did not work. This was fixed in firmware version 4.10, which is the production release following 3.30.

  • AsmugDill thanks for all the tests and all the details you have provided here. I really appreciate them.

I should have been more precise here about the type of alert I am trying to get working. You can get alerts when:

    1. You set up a custom workout and you define a threshold of the variable (pace, hr, etc) which will be triggered during the phase of the workout. I think this is the one you have described above and I think was the one that had the bug fixed in the last release.

    2. Set a generic alert which will be triggered for any run. This is done in Activity Settings -> Alerts -> Add New -> Pace -> Fast Pace ->

I am trying to get working the second option.

    No, it's not that either.

im now 99.9% sure that it is.

went for a run today and twice hit an incline towards the end of a 1k lap whereby my slow alert was triggered almost instantly (in line with my current pace) despite the fact that my lap pace was still much faster than the set target.

so yeah, im pretty convinced that alerts in a normal activity, as per the original posters question, use current pace.
i wouldnt mind a confirmation from some official Garmin type person but until im told otherwise this is my belief.
  • Success

I am happy to report I finally was able to set it up. There was an extra click I was missing and now the alert is showing up.

Like in my old 620, It uses current pace.
