Using built in Run app for walking?

I've had my Forerunner 235 for about 2 weeks now and am using it mainly for cycling and running, and it has been performing brilliantly. I frequently walk with my wife and would like to be able to use my 235 to record that data. Can I just use the built in run app on the watch, or won't it properly record the data since we'll be at a walking pace instead of a running pace? I know there is an app on the IQconnect store called Hike, which has a walk function, but user reviews seem mixed. I'd rather use the garmin built in app if the only issue will be having the walk listed as a run.

Thanks

Or just use "Other". You can use GPS so it will record HR, distance, speed etc. Just reclassify the activity in GC to Casual Walk or Speed Walk which are the two options.
  • I only used Run mode once to record a walk, I wanted to find out the distance it would take to walk around my building. It seemed to work fine.
  • Thanks for the fast replies, I totally forgot about "other". I'll also try out the "run" function.

  • Actually, if you look at the reviews for Hike, they span 4-5 months and a few different releases and a number of FW versions and are still avg 4+, and some of the bad ones are "Cannot get GPS". If you can't get GPS with hike, you likely can't get GPS with a native app, as all hike does is tell the FW to turn on GPS and then wait for data. In one case for example, the user contacted me offline and it turns out was inside a building when trying to get GPS, and it worked fine if they went outside. Another thing that was requested was having a white background on the screens, and that's been available the last few versions.

If there are problems, I fix things quickly and there's a forum thread which will actually give you more info on things reported (I have no way to respond/ask questions with reviews in the store).

If you try Hike and have problems, contact me through https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?335082-App-Hiking or just pm me.

(The version I'm working on now will allow for various data pages to be hidden, as that was something else users requested, for example)

The only reason I don't use "RUN" is I have a concern that it might affect some of the watches learning function for running such as stride length, so I decided to keep walk activities separate.

I use hike. U can select either walk or hike.
  • I use the hike app when I walk my dogs. I like it and haven't had any issues using it, it seems to record accurately.
  • Thanks Jim, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to disparage your app. I'll give it a whirl and let you all know how it goes.

  • No problem.. There are a couple other hiking/walking/etcapps in the store, and sometimes people confuse "Hike" with those (I've even gotten a bad review because a function in one of the others doesn't work) so here's the actual link to Hike:
