Letting the Device Set Your Heart Rate Zones

Former Member

From manual:
The default settings allow the device to detect your maximum heart rate and set your heart rate zones as a percentage of your maximum heart rate.

so i supposed my FR235 set FCMax frequently on the base of my activities, but after some activities i see my FCMax and zones same as default values when first setup FR....
i'm wrong thinking of this kind of behaviour?
thanks a lot
  • I guess the question is whether you have run and got your heartrate higher than the first default value or not and whether you have auto update enabled. If you have in both cases then it might be a bug

yes i had several activities with higher heartrate max than the default 185
there is no auto-update option: according to the manual default settings is intended to this behaviour

    anyone tried this setting?
  • Maximum heart rate readings from activites don't update zones or the 'max' setting, from what I can tell. Which is good because it tends to jump erraticaly on occassion. Would rather set it manually based on the data and my verification. Plus most of the time someones max HR is 1-5beats faster then seen during even very hard workouts or 5k races.

I see a setting on watch for 'auto set' the minimum HR... but that will only effect the Heart Rate Reserve display field (% HRR)
  • The operative keywords being “default settings”

    From manual:
The default settings allow the device to detect your maximum heart rate and set your heart rate zones as a percentage of your maximum heart rate.

so i supposed my FR235 set FCMax frequently on the base of my activities, but after some activities i see my FCMax and zones same as default values when first setup FR....

well i'm a little confused: estabilished that HR zones do not update itself automatically with data taken by activites (is that right? if so the manual is misleading)

I'm curious, but not curious enough to Restore Defaults ( from the watch face) on my FR235 and then refrain from syncing – because Garmin Connect already has my previously set HR Zones thresholds in its database, and hence is apt to overwrite the default settings upon syncing – to see if the watch sets the Max.HR in My Stats to what was observed after several runs.

That would be the only way for me to ascertain whether the manual is factually correct.

I'm wondering about this too. I got this watch a couple weeks ago and have about 10 runs on it so far. My zones haven't automatically updated.
