Heart Rate Zones Not Updating

Former Member
I've changed my RHR and MHR and calculated what my new zones should be. The first thing I did was change this in the Garmin Connect Mobile App and sync. I went on a run, and it didn't convert over to the watch. I checked the app again, it shows correct. Synced again, still didn't go to the watch. I went to the website and verified my zones are what I want on the website, and synced from the website and garmin express app on my pc. The watch still isn't updating to the correct zones. For example, i have my zone 5 to start at 178 BPM and when i look in my stats-user profile - heart rate zones, it shows my max hr correct and my rhr correct, but the zones dont show the correct ranges (zone 5 starts at 167). This is after multiple attempts to sync with two different connections (laptop and mobile app). Please help!!

Try manually inputting the figures for your zones into the watch itself. Select an activity. Menu, My Stats, User Profile and finally HR Zones. Hope this helps.

Update: Sorry, I see you already tried that. I guess I should've paid more attention.
  • Check that on the watch you have it set to use Custom Zones.

Can you advise where this setting is on the watch? I didn't find it when looking through all the options.

I did manage to get it set right by going to the zones on the watch and selecting "reset to default settings" which made it equal to the default settings on the app. I would think this is just a workaround, it should update the zones as I change them on the app without an extra push from me in the watch...
  • Yes, there are problems with setting/syncing Heart Rate Zones

Whether it is by design or in error, I don't think sync works to change Heart Rate Zones settings in either direction.

    • I checked that my Max Heart Rate in Device Settings for my FR235 in Garmin Connect online is 183 bpm.
    • I note that there appears to be no way to set the default Heart Rate Zones (which can be overridden by customised Running and Cycling HRZs) in Garmin Connect online.
    • I went into Heart Rate Zones on the FR235 ( from the watch face), and set the Max. HR to 180 ppm, Resting HR to 60 ppm and Zones to Based On BPM.
    • I then Reset Zones on the FR235, with the result of Z1=90-108, Z2=108-126, Z3=126-144, Z4=144-162, and Z5=162-180, which are entirely different from what is in Garmin Connect online and the Garmin Connect Mobile app (in this case, running on my Windows Phone).
    • I also changed my Height on the FR235 by 1 cm, so that it is different from what is in Garmin Connect online and the Garmin Connect Mobile app.
    • I manually initiated a Sync ( from the watch face, based on my widget order) with Garmin Connect Mobile running on my iPad, and waited for Transfer Complete.
    • Nothing changed in either the Garmin Connect Mobile app, or on my FR235; the data continues to be disparate instead of synced/uniform.
    • I then made some changes to my height and RHR in my User Settings (and saved them) in the Garmin Connect Mobile app.
    • I manually initiated a Sync on the FR235, and waited for Transfer Complete.
    • Nothing changed in either the Garmin Connect Mobile app, or on my FR235; the data continues to be disparate instead of synced/uniform.
    • I waited for the next automatic sync initiated by the Garmin Connect Mobile app to occur, until I sawTransfer Complete.
    • Height, MaxHR and RHR on the watch were now overwritten on the FR235 by the values in the Garmin Connect Mobile app, but the Zones on the FR235 remain unchanged. From a functional logic perspective that does not make sense, because while the MaxHR on the FR235 is 183 bpm, Z5 continues to be 162-180.
    • I made some changes to the zone thresholds in the Garmin Connect Mobile app.
    • I waited for the next automatic sync initiated by the Garmin Connect Mobile app to occur, until I saw Transfer Complete.
    • Nothing changed in either the Garmin Connect Mobile app, or on my FR235; the data continues to be disparate instead of synced/uniform.
    • I then changed the threshold for Z5 on the FR235 to 163, after which Z5 becomes 163-180 (and not 163-183).
    • It took Reset Zones on the FR235 for it to recognise that the ceiling for Z5 has changed.

The other problem area is that in Garmin Connect online and Garmin Connect Mobile, there appears to be a bit of inconsistency in the code as to whether the label of "% of Max" means percentage of Heart Rate Reserve (offset from Resting HR) or percentage of Maximum HR, not just between apps and/or web site, but within the Garmin Connect Mobile app itself (at least on Windows Phone).

Where on the 235 is the setting to make it use custom zones?

Thank you, this confirms what I'm seeing. It seems the only way to update the zones on the watch (besides manually entering them via the watch) is to update them on Garmin Connect and then sync and then go into the watch settings and reset the zones to default to match the settings on Garmin Connect.

Menu> My Stats> User Profile> Heart Rate Zones.

This gives me three options - Max HR - Resting HR - and Zones. When I select Zones, I get a few options to change the actual zone ranges, but no where is there just a setting that enables the use of custom zones that have been changed on the app.
  • HR Zones can not be changed in Garmin Connect

I'm seeing the same thing with my devices. I've got a Forerunner 305 and a 405, and have reset the maximum HR over the years. However, I'm noticing that the workouts I set up in Garmin Connect still use my younger (higher) maximum heart rate in setting the zones. Clearly, the maximum HR and zone settings is stored somewhere in Garmin Connect (as it was on the old PC program), but it appears that we can't get access to it.
  • Problem is zones are not sybcing through garmin express.
The only way I managed to reset the zones is:
    1. Manually set RHR and MAX in the Mobile Connect, then set 50-60-70-80-90% because app won't do it for you.
    2. Sync the watch.
    3. In the watch, reset the HR zones WHILE BPM view is selected. Then switch to whichever option you want (BPM, HRR, or %MAX)
