Heart Rate Zones

I recently purchased a forerunner 230 and am trying to configure my HR Zones. I want to set my zones according to lactate threshold and not max hr. However, I am finding setting the zones via garmin connect to be a real pain. My Lactate threshold is around 170 and my max heart rate about 185. Is it possible to do this? Or did I waste my money on a watch I cannot use?
  • This is what I am trying to do. I have set it based on bpm. However, I am not able to specify gaps between certain zones. For instance zone2 (81-89%)is 136-151. Zone3(96-100%) is 163-170. What happens is if I set zone2 to start at 136 and end at 151, it wants to start zone3 at 151. It won't let start zone3 at 163.
  • Gaps between zones doesn't make sense as they are concurrent so you are always in a zone. There are 5 zones and the default seems sensible to me. Why do you want to change them? If you really do want them customised then create a zone 3 between your 2 zones and call your zone3 zone4.

I want to change my zones to match that of recommendations by Matt Fitzgerald in his book 80/20 running.

    Zone1: 75-80% of Lactate Threshold
    Zone2: 81-89% of Lactate Threshold
    Zone3: 96-100% of Lactate Threshold
    Zone4: 102-105% of Lactate Threshold
    Zone5: 106+% of Lactate Threshold

Note the gap or buffer between zone 2 and zone 3. This is created to prevent one from riding the fence between low and moderate intensities.
  • Zones have to be contiguous. Simple. The idea's nice, but the practically is not.

When training, ensure you don't ride the fence :)

I guess the other alternative is when creating a workout rather than set a particular zone to stick to specify bpm.

Configuring HR training zones based on the lactate threshold training method, is coming in April.
  • Skip zone 1.
Make a gap a 'technical zone'
That's the way to go for now I think

Where does Garmin Connect get its Heart Rate Zones from?

I have seen 3 different sections for modifying zones: in the user section of the watch; in the phone's mobile app's user settings; and in the Garmin Connect web app.

I have set zones in my watch and phone's app to be 50-60-70-80-90-100, more consistent with all the literature.

The ones from the Garmin Connect web app are not 50-60-70-80-90-100, but rather go as 66-73-80-86-94-100. Why the weird spacing?

Now, are the weird ones obtained from my runs and suggested as more appropriate? Should I use these?
