How to avoid chest band pairing with FR235

Hi,
Today running with a friend (who was wearing a Fenix with chest band), my 235 coupled with his band and showed me his HR instead of mine.
I did not do any prior coupling process with his chest band, but it automatically joined my device, changing the signal of my optical sensor by his signal.
It is easy to turn off the wrist optical sensor, but, how can I avoid any ant+ band to pair with my device and keep the optical sensor working?
Might be a silly question, but I only see 2 choices: Automatic (the optical sensor works unless there is an external band available) or "off for the optical sensor". I want "on" the optical and "off" external bands.
Thanks

Of course that would be better. But since we know that both measurements show different readings, especially during high intensity workouts, I want to know how much (or little) I can trust the optical sensor because at the end, I just want to run without chest belt.
  • it's meant to be by close proximity only and i believe you have to be close for a few seconds, so no hugging before races!

    Hi guys.

I went into a race today with my girlfriend and suddenly her footpod was automatically paired with my FR 235. I thought it was very strange cause the watch didn't ask any question. It just simple connected it.

I thought that footpods and HRM straps was coded (and I really think it should be), but my FR 235 showed me different.

Im very afraid of it, because once I went into a street run and asked my ANT smartphone to search for my HRM and it found more than 100. Ouch! So I ran without HRM on this run.

I've decided then to memorize my HRM number so if this happen again, I know wich one is mine.

Back to the FR 235, it's unnaceptable that it connects to an unknown equipment. It's weird in many levels (I may mess with someone conneted HRM, who knows)

So I think we must get the attention of support (which I opened a personal ticket), but I think it's a software issue and we need it fixed.

Thanks all for sharing the experience

Marcelo, did you get any reply from Garmin support? Could they present a solution? Are they fixing something software-wise?

If the watch pairs with a HR strap/footpod etc of somebody you regularly run with and want to ensure it does not again, then the "solution" is to actually let it pair and then go into Settings, Sensors & Accessories , select the relevant entry and set the Status to Off. Then it won't pair again.

Usually things should only pair when the watch and the sensor is very close but of course sometimes that does mean you might pick up somebody else's.

As a HR strap is generally more accurate than the optical one, then the default setting is to use an "External" HR strap.
  • Why are Garmin persevering with this stupid idea.
As everyone has suggested time and time again, if you want to pair with an accesory, have an option to that effect.
Why anyone would want to automaticlly pair with any accessory that comes within range of the watch is totally beyond me.

I completely agree! I like to have it simple, so far so good. But I want to have control! What I would love would be to register a device the first time I want to connect it to my watch. From then, it should automatically connect when available.
  • I thought Garmin corrected this issue with Firmware Ver 4.3 "Added support for searching for sensors manually." Since then, in order to pair a new sensor I've had to go to "Menu -> Settings -> Sensors and Accessories -> Add New". I was very glad to see this change...but now I'm wondering if the FR235 will still pair spontaneously. Has anyone experienced this since firmware 4.3 was released?
