Smart Notifications Disappear Quickly?

I just got my FR 235 and love it, but I'm having a bad experience with the Smart Notifications (for calls, texts, emails from my phone) and I'm trying to figure out if my experience is normal or if something is wrong.

The FR connects via bluetooth to my Android phone just fine. Whenever my phone gets a call, text, or email, the FR vibrates and makes a sound, just as expected.

However, the message (e.g., a text) is displayed on the watch for just a moment (and I can even scroll through longer messages if it doesn't fit on the screen all at once), but then it disappears a second later. If I don't see the message pop up on the watch within the first couple of seconds, it's gone. Worse, when I scroll to notifications, it just says "No Notifications," and there is no way to retrieve the message or any older messages, and so i can't read the message if I didn't catch it right away.

(1) Is it normal for the Smart Notifications to display only for moment and then disappear without any way to go back and read them?
(2) Is the watch supposed to store some of the recent Smart Notification messages so that I can review a few historical messages?

Thanks for any answers or suggestions.
  • It seems to vary for me (using Samsung S5). Sometimes the notification stays up for about 3-5 seconds, and sometimes it barely shows up at all. What I've noticed is that if I missed a notification, so the notification is waiting to be seen, then subsequent notifications just go into the queue, they don't show up at all. So I have to go and clear the notifications waiting before I get to see any more on my 235. Also, if you have something on your phone that clears notifications, once it's clear on your phone, it also gets cleared out on the watch. My former Pebble allowed me to choose whether I wanted that bond (clearing the notification on either the phone or the watch would clear it on the other) or not. Garmin doesn't seem to have that option.

Thanks. Sounds like my experience isn't that different, except that your notifications go into the queue. I don't get that: once a notification is gone, there is no queue. My notifications get cleared out, and the notification screen just says "No Notifications".

I considered whether there is a setting on my phone. It's an old phone (Samsung Note 2), but after looking through the settings on the phone for a while, I couldn't find anything that seemed helpful.

If anyone knows of any settings on the Forerunner that would help keep notifications around in the queue, that would be great.
  • For me (Note3) my notifications alert me and then go away after a short time but can still access them through the notifications widget. From there or at the time of the initial notification I can read the message and then have the choice to back out (keeping the notification) or dismissing it (and deleting the notification from the 235). The messages stay 'unread' on the phone side so that if I then get a subsequent measage, the 235 will say I have 2 messages. A major problem I have is that if I ever have more than 1 notification it will not let me read individual messages. Another problem is that I cannot see content of emails even if it is plain text.
