Bugs and Issues

There is a feature and improvement thread and all kinds of topics on issues, wouldn't it be nice for Garmin (and others) to have a clear list of current issues and bugs? This is what I know so far...

BUGS:
  • Cadence Lock
Issue where HR is locked to your cadence, leading to unusable heartrate values. Possibly fixed by wearing the watch extra tight. Some people seem to suffer more from this then others, but it's a know issue.

  • OHR reliability
OHR monitor doesn't adjust well to changes (interval training for example). Has issue in colder temperatures and just general issues (cadence lock or 'values which are way off').

  • Custom Workout Alerts
No alerts in custom workouts for custom targets (for example pace or speed)

  • 66 HR Lock
Issue where the HR is always shown as (or rather, stuck at) 66 (and some other values, but most often 66). Power reset or turning HR off and on sometimes work, but no guarantee.

  • Default to 72 HR
When checking your heartrate it first goes to 72 before actually showing your HR. Could be a design choice, but apparently already marked as a bug by garmin support.

Any others? I'll try to update this post :)

ISSUES?:
  • 24/7 monitoring frequency
Because the polling frequency is reduced big time to save battery life the 24/7 monitoring feature is not as usable for quite a few people. A choice for continuous/timed/smart polling would be recommended.

  • RHR reliability
Result of the point above... (as your HR is only polled very infrequently it's hard(er) to get a reliable RHR).

Not sure if the 24/7 monitoring for example should be listed as a bug or a design choice/issue,, same goes for the RHR point.

A very important summary thread. Should be made a sticky. It will save duplicate posts, and be an easy-to-find summary of what the main problems are. Especially valuable for new visitors looking for answers on their own issues, and full disclosure to those interested in buying.

However it's important that the first post be continually updated as new information becomes available to avoid having to read through pages of comments.

    And Garmin Connect?

Should we have a GC section here as well? I realise that GC has its own area of the forum, but people often see the watch and the data from GC as one. And again may stop duplicate posts.
  • Can posts be continuously updated? I surely am willing to do so (at least for now ;) ). But yeah, the idea is mainly to have a clear overview of current things instead of all the various topics...

About the Garmin Connect bugs, not sure... As it's not really tied to the watch specifically maybe. Then again, good to know of issues, will check for currently know GC bugs as well first :)
  • I can add two additional ones related to how the data feeds into and is interpreted by Garmin Connect.

    1) Total Distance and Active Calories differ from each other on Steps widget page and on the Steps Detail page (per the Activities tab where timed activities and daily steps are broken out). Also this issue seems to be connected to somewhat of a doubling of distances and calories for the daily steps. For example, I ran 20 miles one day and it showed that I also walked 19.3 miles. It is not a syncing issue because I looked at historical data. This is a known issue and Garmin's engineering team is working on it. It has been reported by many and has been outstanding for over a month.

    2) The total number of steps walked or run during the day sometimes does not match the histogram provided on the Steps Details tab. For example, I had 28,000 steps run (22,000) and walked (6,000) yesterday, but when I add up the histogram step counts on a spreadsheet, they come up to only 10,000 steps. This same 10,000 is what feeds into Apple Health. I called Garmin today and they were able to verify that this is a problem. They opened a ticket for it, so we will see.
  • Phantom laps when the end of a workout step coincides with the end of an Autolap interval in overall distance.

Add ability to select Cadence data field to "Other" Profile

Has anyone else noticed that the Cadence field is missing from the "Other" activity profile? Since Garmin has given us this catch-all activity profile to address myriad activities we could be engaging in, shouldn't there be the option of displaying and recording cadence?

For example, I use the "Other" profile for hiking and some people might use it for walking etc and have a legitimate desire for this data. When you upload to GC with the "Other" profile, cadence is not displayed.

I realize that I could just use the "Run" profile and change it to "Hiking" once uploaded to GC, but that defeats the purpose of being able to tailor the data displayed on the watch during the activity. I don't want to see my "Run" data, I'd like to see some other things... elevation, heading, sunset, etc.

I contend that the lack of the cadence field in the "Other" activity profile is a bug/issue and propose that Garmin either add a "Hike/Walk" profile that allows cadence to be recorded, or allow cadence to be selected, displayed, and recorded as part of the "Other" activity profile.

This is not a bad idea but the danger is that you condense the forum into one thread and have multiple interwoven discussions about each issue. For that I prefer to keep one thread for one topic. Some of these are very long as it is. Most of the issues discussed here are to do with optical HR in some shape or form. I think for this to be a "sticky" it might be better as a "closed" thread but that is not that easy to manage. Also you have got issues like pace alerts in workouts that clearly can be fixed. You are never going to "fix" HR reliability though as you can be sure it won't work for somebody some day.

You can just edit your first very nice summary post as people mention things in the comments.

Until, (or if), Garmin changes this, there's a couple of apps called "Hike" and "Walk" in Connect IQ that sounds what you're looking for.

I used to spend so many time in Vivosmart forum when I first got it almost a year ago. Their sticky thread is very useful and fill with known issue and stuff.

If we have those kind of thread here in our buggy-as-hell FR235 forum, it would be very much appreciated!
