Garmin speed/cadence sensor paired but no cadence displayed on data field or activity

I've paired my Garmin speed/cadence sensor to the FR 235, and I have added the cadence data field to the 'indoor cycle' activity, but I'm getting no cadence data in the activity data filed or the recorded activity. Has anyone else seen this behavior?
  • And The Answer Is . . .

I called Garmin support, and the Garmin GSC-10 speed/cadence sensor is not compatible with the FR 235. The GSC-10 is the older model of the speed/cadence sensor. I didn't know there was a new model. The new speed/cadence sensor does not use magnets—no more 'arm-thingy' to position. Looks like an improvement.
  • That doesn't seem right. It's broadcasting ANT+ so should work. Are you sure you have the crank magnet lined up properly with the body of the GSC-10? When you press the small white button on the body of the sensor do you see red/green light as you turn the crank/wheel?

The tech. referred me to the FR 235 product page and stated that if the GSC-10 was not listed as an accessory that it wasn't compatible. I agree with you though about the fact that it's sending ANT+ and so should be read by the FR. I'm getting cadence data on TrainerRoad and Zwift through the USB ANT+ stick, but that might actually be coming from the Quarq ELSA power meter. I'll have to double-check the crank arm magnet.
  • You can check at the ANT+ website for details, but basically there are various different profiles that tell the receiver what the transmitter is sending. In this case, the transmitter is sending the speed/cadence profile, but apparently the 235 only understands the separate speed and cadence profiles. The GSC-10 is speaking a language the 235 doesn't understand.
  • Not sure that is right. I have a 630 paired to my GSC-10 and I haven't seen any issues. I don't use my 630 to record much cycling as I have an Edge 1K but I'll see if I can dig out an activity to share.

[Edit] see https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/989014105 by the way the big period with no values was because I forgot to turn off my activity whilst I was in the post office!

I've paired to the "Spd/Cad" profile on a Wattbike and got speed and cadence info OK.

I suspect the real reason the GSC-10 is not listed as an accessory is that it is obsolete and I can't see it being offered for sale on the Garmin website.

When you pair the GSC-10 what options do you have? If you have a speed/cadence option as opposed to separate speed and separate cadence, then you should be good to go.

This is just awesome news! I ordered the GSC-10 off Amazon for my 235 and it's already out for delivery. I just checked and Amazon sells the speed and cadence sensor that works with the 235 for $30 less too. I guess that's what I get when I buy before doing the research.

Not necessarily. If there is an option to pair a speed/cadence sensor then you will likely be good to go. Nobody has replied as yet as to whether that option exists in the 235.

A search on the interweb suggests that this option exists. It maybe that the OP does not have his set up correctly or only selected to pair with a speed sensor.

Let us know what happens when you get yours.

No worries . . . I just confirmed that my issue was with the crank arm magnet. I normally get cadence from my Quarq power meter, so I didn't realize there was an issue with the GSC-10's magnet. The GSC-10 does indeed work with the FR 235. :)
