Garmin's Weather Widget - what is it telling me?!

This question is about the standard Garmin weather widget that comes preloaded on the watch.

While it looks pretty, I'm at a loss as to what it is actually trying to tell me! For example, today it has a picture of the sun partially covered by clouds (that's fine, I get that means I'll have a partially cloudy day with some breaks in the cover) but then it also says 3 (which may mean temperature but there is no way it is 3 degrees C outside) then 5/2 (no idea!) and 100% (no idea, but it definitely isn't the battery level!)

What am I looking at? What does each line tell me?!

Thanks

The 3 is supposed to be the current temperature. Depending on where you are the accuracy is questionable. I believe it expects location data from your phone to determine you location and thus the temperature for that location.

The 5/2 is the forcast max/min for today. Again based off location data.

The 100% is the chance of precipitation I believe. It thinks it's raining where you are.

If you click the run button when in the weather widget, you'll get the hourly forcast for the next few hours and then for the next few days if you click down.

I just use this data as 'roughly indicative' data as it can vary wildly from actual. I don't know what the source of this data is but I believe it tends to be more accurate for some locations than others.
  • Thanks HaniC! That makes perfect sense.

Of course, the forecast is completely wrong, but what you've told me does make sense. Looking at the hourly forecast it says there is 100% chance of rain for every hour of the remaining day, which isn't going to happen owing to the light, white clouds above me and the patches of blue sky!
  • Is it possible it is pulling the weather data for the location the watch last obtained a GPS fix? Mine's been pretty spot on, though I'm typically close to where I ran outdoors that day or the day before.
  • Last GPS location is less than half a mile from my house, so even if it is doing that, it wouldn't make a difference.

If I compare the Garmin forecast with BBC Weather, or even the AccuWeather widget there is no chance of rain for the next 2 hours according to AW and non at all for the day according to the BBC.
  • Yeah. I found that widget pretty misleading, but still accurate for my location (Auckland, NZ)
  • Location while not using the App

For it to be accurate, you need to allow the Garmin Connect App to access your location "Always" (even when you are not using the app). In iOS, that's under:

Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> Connect -> Always

You also need to have Bluetooth switched-on on the watch and be within close proximity to the phone. So here's how I look at it: If I'm so close to the phone, I might as well look at my phone for more detailed weather forecast. Plus I noticed that leaving Bluetooth switched-on on the watch, significantly diminishes the battery life, especially during a run, so I've got it off unless I sync an activity and switch it back off again.
  • Thanks - that's what I was guessing, nice to know rather than guess!
