I don't know for sure, but I would suspect the answer is no. I'm trying to think of a time I would ever need to press any of the buttons while underwater.
Some watches have the switch sealed separately, some not. I'm using the example under water as an extreme example, if safe there i.e. when swimming, it'll definitely be safe in the shower when you could be viewing notifications etc.
I just thought about diving too. So, you ask a very good question. I did read somewhere that the buttons on the VSHR shouldn't be pressed while showering. It has the same depth rating as the FR235, so I'm assuming it's the same. Sorry I wasn't able to help.
Here you go: Before engaging in water-based activities please check the Specifications and Device Care section of your Owner's manual. Always avoid pressing the keys when the watch is wet or submerged. If your watch should get wet, it should always be wiped dry before attempting to change settings or modes. For more information on suitable and unsuitable activities, see the Water Ratings page on the Garmin website support.garmin.com/.../case.faces
