Indoor Running Calibration

I just got my FR230 in the mail on Monday and have so far loved playing around with it. This is my first Garmin, and really my first real running watch. I'm running my first marathon in 2016 and finally decided to take the plunge to help coordinate my plans.

That being said, as the weather drops into the negatives (I live in Vermont), my outdoor running is pretty limited this time of year so I switch to treadmill running for a few months before getting back outside. On my first run using the FR230 in "Indoor Running" mode, the pace and distance stats were WAY off. Granted, my treadmill might not be the most accurate thing in the world, but I was running at a 7.5 minute pace and went for 4 miles, but my 230 said that I ran 6.1 miles at a 6 minute pace. I read elsewhere in the forums here that sometimes you just need to do a few outdoor "runs" to get the watch calibrated to me instead of in the default mode, but I can't really get out for a run right now. I did go for a 4 mile walk yesterday using GPS, hoping it might help. But I ran again on the treadmill today and while the pace/distance were a bit closer to reality, it wasn't by much.

Is there anything else I can do to get the treadmill calibration to closer match what I actually run? I tried looking in the manual but couldn't really find anything definitive.

It's not a huge deal in the end I suppose, but if I'm going to start getting into pace/interval routines, it would be very helpful to use my 230 to help keep records.

Thanks!
  • As far as I'm aware it will only calibrate based on outdoor GPS runs. That said I've found that the more I run outside the less accurate the watch alone is on the TM.

I've been using the 235 since late November. At first it tracked pretty well on the TM but yesterday I was doing mile repeats with the intervals at an 8 min/mi pace and recoveries at 10 min/mi pace, but the watch read 8:35 and 9:35 respectively.

Personally what works best for me is using a foot pod that has been used for one outdoor easy run to get the best results while running on a TM. Obviously I forgot my foot pod yesterday.

    Thank you for the input.

I think I might just deal with the inaccuracy for now, as I only plan to run indoors on a treadmill for the next few months before going back outside. It's not a huge deal, but it would be nice if it would record my treadmill runs accurately.
