ANT+ range (using Elite Misuro B+)

I paired the Forerunner 235 with the Misuro B+ speed & cadence sensor, which is supplied with the Elite Turbo Muin Smart B+ trainer. However, as soon as I place my hand [the watch] on the handlebar, the connection is lost. I have to put my hand behind my back to re-establish the connection while training, but then it's lost the instant I move my hand back onto the handlebar!

I'm not sure who to blame, but is there a way to increase the ANT+ radio range of either devices?

Kind regards.
  • Nothing you can really do on the 235 am afraid.

Have you got (or used) any other Garmin devices with this sensor? It does sound a rather poor range for sure.
  • Dear Tim,

Thanks for your response. Yes, I've used the Garmin Cadence sensor, which seems to work ok. I've paired the Garmin Speed sensor but I haven't been out yet to test it (since the trainer is a direct drive, and the weather is too cold for me!).

I've contacted Elite, and they suggested it was the watch. Here's a relevant portion of their response:

Garmin's watches usually have low transmission signal because they usually work with sensors very close (heart rate sensor).

To confirm it, please try the Misuro B+ with our app My E-Training and by keeping your smartphone at least at 1,5 m from the sensor Misuro B+ during the training sessions (i.e. on the handlebar or more). If it won't lost the connection, it means that it's Garmin limit (probably to save the battery of the watch they didn't consider to increase the signal) otherwise if you will lose the connection also with our app please let me know.

I tried using a Samsung S6 (with ANT+), and indeed it seems to work better (and farther). But in the 235 defense, it works just as well if I place the watch on the handlebar (not my wrist!). I tried experimenting, and it seems I can pick up the signal if I place the watch on my right wrist, but never on my left!

I'm not sure if the 235 would pick the correct heart rate signal from my right wrist. I no longer have a cyclocomputer either, because I couldn't use the Edge 25 with the home trainer, since there was no way to set the wheel size! :(

    Kind regards,
  • Fairly predictable response then!

At least on a turbo trainer you can experiment and put the watch somewhere that does get reception.

Wearing on a different hand can make a difference. It does "improve" things for me with power meter reception with a 920 for instance if I wear it on my right wrist - better line of sight between the two devices.
