Found a significant bug:

Yesterday, I logged a 13 mile walk as a "run" using my 235. I logged it as a run, as there is no hike or walk activity selection. I used my footpod and Garmin ANT+ Chest strap, as these are far more accurate than the watch (they need to fix this). I recorded just shy of 13 miles and 31,000 steps, and was dual gps'ing with GPS and GLONAS. All was well and good until this morning when I looked at my connect sync and noticed that it claims 30 miles and doubled the calories. It appears to me that it is taking the total steps and adding them into the formula after already logging them in the activity. This is incorrect. I noticed that my assumed active calories was also roughly doubled. This seems like it can be easily addressed, and MUST be. Has anybody else noticed this. Also, why no "hike" or "walk" activities?

Looks like yesterday was, sadly, a blip.

too bad...so was yesterday OK by the end of the day? Were there any days, esp days when you did not have an activity, since getting the watch that looked ok?

Yesterday was the only day that seemed like I could almost believe the calories calculated from the steps I walked (I did not have an 'ACTIVITY' yesterday):
    Daily Steps = 7380 (3.89 miles)
    Active Calories = 912
I say 'almost believe' since, clearly, 912 KCal still seems extremely generous for 3.89 miles. For me, I would expect something more along the lines of 600 KCal burned if I actually WALKED as an 'ACTIVITY' for 3.9 miles, so just strolling around the hospital yesterday (even if it was 3.9 miles worth of strolling) seems unlikely to have burned 912 calories.

yep...for me (81Kg male) that would be about 270 Kcal as casual steps which is more than 3-fold less and based on your other days where you have comparable steps but higher active calories it is even worse. Whereas my burn rate when running is only about 25% less than yours (so there it is more BMR related, and run activity uses HR data). My activities matches on-line net calorie calculators pretty well whether by distance or HR with GC's. As you note the casual step burn rate is crazy in your case (my guess for you is about 40 cal per 1000).

    Double from running/walking

I am having the same issue with MFP and the doubling of calories. I did a 20 mile run today for ~1100 calories, but my total active calories is ~2400 calories which is definitely not right!

what does yours show (steps/calories/distance) in the line for daily steps under the activity tab of the step module in GC as per example attached for the day of that run?

I just got my Forerunner 235 yesterday and noticed that the calories for my daily steps also seems wildly high. Your numbers seem to be very plausible on your attachment. This is my only fitness tracker so nothing should be doubling up the numbers so I'm not sure why they are so high...

    Sick of all the inaccuracies

I'm so sick of all the inconsistencies with the whole Garmin Watch/Garmin Mobile App/Garmin Connect ecosystem. Every day there is something wrong. I can guestimate all the data the system provides with better accuracies without using anything. Has it always been this useless?

Today I had a workout with two activities. I got that whole double count distance error for my daily steps. My active calories are way too high. However, all steps for the past three hours and HR data is just not there in GC. I just synced like I usually do but it's all messed up for some reason. For the past four days it's been all messed up and I haven't had one day since I got this watch where I looked at the data and thought yep, that seems about right. One day it's lower than expected, the next day it's way higher.

Does Garmin even care about the product/service they're providing? It's getting worse and worse and they're in danger or irreversibly damaging their reputation.

I have no issue with actual 'activities'. The HRM seems good enough. The calorie count for activities also seems reasonable but for everything else it's useless and inconsistent. If they marketed it as a pure running/cycling watch, then it would be fine, but the fact that they've been able to market it as a 24/7 activity tracker to compete with others should almost be illegal as it doesn't do that with any accuracy - maybe 10% max. Bloody uselss - I'm so close to returning it.

Thanks for the suggestion but I've been through every setting over and over again on GC, the app and the watch. I'm certain all these errors are just due to garmins crappy software.

They have always been good at hardware but their software know how has always been lacking.
  • I suggest you all raising a ticket with garmin, best to show them some concrete examples as well. Me ans some others have already done that. The more the merrier though. Helps to raise awareness that sie methong needs to be done.
