High Active Calories

Hi, I just noticed something new in the last couple days. Early in the morning I'm getting high Active calorie numbers (4-500 before 10am) for doing very little to no activity. The day before this started, I walked around for much of the day and had less than 300 total active calories. Heart rate was not abnormal at any time. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

    Hi, I think there are a few other threads noting this phenomenon. I myself am experiencing it as well, only with calories associated with step count. For example, yesterday I walked ~6600 steps for a purported >2900 calories. Today I jogged 3 miles for a reported calorie burn of ~650, which is reasonable and realistic based on YEARS of tracking with a chest strap and the Wahoo Sports app. So it appears for me at least to be limited to step count calories. I submitted a ticket and propose you do the same since, generally speaking, these boards are not monitored by Garmin. It remains to be seen whether I will have the same (lack of) response as GailNestor has reported in a few other threads, but I'm hoping to hear back next week after the New Year Holiday is in the rear view mirror...

    Things are looking fairly normal this morning regarding the active calories.

    That is good to hear, maybe mine will eventually straighten itself out but today was not the day. Jogged 4.3 miles this morning, burned 705 calories (definitely plausible). Walked about 3K steps beyond that so far today, for an additional 2800 calories from those additional steps. So essentially seeing *approximately* 1 KCal/step. I WISH! ;D So I will be submitting tickets daily until I get some acknowledgement of the situation...

    do the 2800 include your BMR? What did the total burn for the day say?

    I had a couple of weird days when it comes to active calorie calculations. On both new years eve and new years day, I had a couple of lazy days where I didn't run/workout and didn't get that many steps in but there was a huge difference in active calories for some reason.

    31st Dec
    Steps = 5553
    Dist = 4.8kms
    Cal = 331

    1st Jan
    Steps = 3980
    Dist = 3.5kms
    Cal = 1031

    Clearly something is wrong here. Ave HR would have been about the same for both days but I got much much higher active calories for less steps??

    By your walking stride length of about 86cm you are obviously reasonably tall but even the 31/12 burnrate of 70 kcal/km appears high (about mine running that distance at 130bpm). It may be worth checking your profile & activity level https://connect.garmin.com/modern/settings/personal (it wouldn't help explaining the very high day on 1/1). Do you a higher number than expected for the net calorie goal in case it is doing something strange in calculations even outside of activities?

    No, here is the breakdown for today so far:
    4.33 mile run - 705 KCal
    Steps - 2085 'Active Calories'
    total for day including BMR to this point - 4015

    Like I said, it would be awesome if true, but no. freaking. way.

    Now, as you suggest, 2800 is an entirely plausible and reasonable total for the entire day, with run, BMR, and steps all combined. Now, when I look in MyFitnessPal, they are showing a 'Full Daily Projection' from garminconnect of 4483; interestingly, MFP's guestimation of my total from BMR, run, and steps is 3397, still rather generous I think but much more believable...

    Mine does odd things as well when integrating Garmin data into MFP but not all the time (maybe coincidental but issues started when I enabled negative adjustments in MFP about a week or so ago). They have however mostly sorted out by the end of each day (except when there are apparent step processing issues and I can get double counting of my activity step calories into my non-activity steps). Perhaps the warning by MFP "If you are unable to sync your tracking device until late in the day, or if you don't consistently use your tracking device, you may prefer not to enable negative adjustments". A lot of my days start with a big negative burn!

    I may disable that MFP setting as it doesn't appear to help me that much anyway (I believe it takes a new day before coming into effect). If it is not that then likely something is amiss with GC rather than the FR.

    Sure, I agree the problem is with GC somehow; I mostly brought up MFP it to illustrate the discrepancy between it and GC. I actually don't use MFP a whole lot for anything actually, I just happened to notice the other day that they are still doing calorie guesstimations even with the data feed direct from GC and that it was much more realistic. Interestingly, my wife believes that her 235 is UNDERestimating calories; however, she is and always has been much more fit than me and has never really monitored calorie calculation data. And for me, the 235 is my first foray into the realm of 'fitness trackers' but I have a pretty good handle on how I burn calories given my exertion level and duration of a given activity. So the current problem with GC is more a curiosity to me since I have always been skeptical of the actual contribution that shuffling back and forth at work all day long makes beyond metabolic rate ;D

    That stride length has been calibrated by me after several walks. I'm about 180cm 86kgs. I think usually the calories for normal steps is about right (or as correct as it can be) but on those two days that I mentioned, something definitely went wrong.

    I'm thinking it has something to do with the crappy all day HR measurement. If it gets it wrong on the high or low side then sometimes this value can be used for over 30mins whereby the real HR was nothing like what was actually measured for the period.

    I'm pretty certain I had configured all my details correctly in GC
