Add another activity type

Hi Guys,

Just bought my new 235 and updated it to latest version.

I can see it is born with four activity types (running, running indoor, biking, other), but how do I add an new type (skiing, walking, skating, golfing) etc?

It seems like other garmin products has a "new type" in the menu, but my forerunner has not.

Thanks,
René
  • You can't with this model am afraid - at least not with the standard watch firmware. Typically the "other" products are higher end products.
That said, there are some CIQ apps emerging that allow different activity types. For instance Jim who posts on here quite a lot has done a walk/hike app.

And as of just yesterday, I added an Indoor Walking app. It's like Hike, but doesn't use GPS, and therefore, not as many functions or as much data.

  • Thanks

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info. I think it is a big drawback that you cannot add an activity type. I was under the assumption that whatever you can choose in the connect app would be available on the watch as well - I wish I knew that, when I bought the watch.

But its great to heat that you can create other CIQ apps. Thank you for that, Jim. So, I just have to watch out for similar apps as well.

    Thanks,
    René
  • There are other things out in the store, like a "gym timer". I've not used it, but it records an activity as "fitness equiptment, IIRC. And I think there's also one for skiing.. (I live in a desert, so don't ski much! :) )
  • Agreed - there should really be a sports mode - both indoor and outdoor.
  • You can take a look at this app -- https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/b14a4e1b-baf3-4371-98ca-23afd94009c4

There are a few activity types which it supports. While there are more activity types supported in Garmin Connect, the SDK doesn't really map all of them. (some of them are mapped to "uncategorised" which is a shame")

Also, of late, it seems like Garmin is also doing something in the background which is breaking some of the linkages (and mapping them back to uncatergorised)
