24x7 HR Recording - What do you actually want?

I mentioned the topic of 24x7 HR recording to Garmin and they replied "We are always open to feedback, and we could consider doing something in response to customer feedback."

So I thought would be a good idea to use this thread to focus on what exactly this "customer feedback" is!

So shall we do a Q&A.

1. Assuming you are on a recent full release or public beta (3.20/3.25/3.30) are you happy with 24x7 HR recording as it stands? (Yes or No)

2. If the answer is no, is that because the HR recording interval is not often enough? (Yes = not often enough, No = some other issue - please explain)

3. Ideally how often would you like HR to be sampled? The answer could be on a fixed interval (e.g. every 30 secs, every minute or every 5 mins or "Smart" depending on movement etc etc)

4. Should the sampling rate be user configurable?

5. Would you willing to accept much lower battery life as a result? Even to the extent of possibly having to charge daily?

6. What is your main interest in 24x7 HR recording? E.g monitoring RHR, more accurate calorie counting outside proper runs, just curiosity, or am not interested in it.

Any other suggestions. Please keep this to the point. For example, if you are having problems then this is not the right forum thread.

I dont really see the point of that thread either as despite lots of sensible suggestions nothing seems to have been done.
The point is to offer customer feedback – as input data only – unilaterally for Garmin to consider at its discretion. There is no tit-and-tat with the company, and the absence of an observable response does not mean the company either tacitly accepted the suggestions, or have deemed them to be of no merit.

This thread, that other thread, … and the forum as a whole is not provided as an official engagement channel with the company on which it is obliged to respond to Garmin product users. Why do some people persist in imagining it's about getting their desired outcomes, or that they have any direct mechanism in exerting pressure to bring about change? We're not in control, and that was never the premise of any discussions on here. Users can bounce ideas off each other while Garmin looks on from the sidelines, but if you – as a customer – want to bounce ideas off Garmin, you ought to do so via Garmin Ideas page without involving fellow customers, and without having the illusion of strength-in-numbers.

I post what I post in this forum because it pleases me to say my piece (and thanks to Garmin for providing the soapbox), and not because I think I'll effectively change either my fellow consumers or Garmin, or win anyone over to my way of thinking, etc. Influence was never the point of being a user.
  • It kind of occurred to me with 24x7 HR recording that have had this on a 235 and then a 735 for sometime now but what actually, if anything, is it doing for me. Unsurprisingly when I am not running or cycling my HR is quite low - no surprise there then.

Regarding feature requests thread, I noticed the very first on that has been implemented. So not all a waste of time but ASmugDill is correct, just because you think something is important many others might not and clearly a company like Garmin can't please everybody.

Past experience with Garmin indicates that mid range watches like the 235 rarely get much added post release.
The only watch that seemed to get features added indefinitely was the Fenix 3 but they seem to run out of resources on that one as it has not, for instance, got Strava Live Segments.
Resources is probably a problem for the 235 anyway. It does not, unsurprisingly, have a very high spec compared to more expensive watches like the 735.
  • Rhr

I'd recommend that they fix the RHR function on the 235. For the past year it's been totally off and its a known issue. Disappointing!

    Suggestion

How about leave the heart-rate monitoring as it is, except for when the watch detects enough moment to reset the Move Bar. For example, when I climb a flight of stairs it would be nice to have an up-to-date HR reading. When I'm sitting on the couch, not so much. It doesn't need to be every second, or anything though. Maybe every 10 seconds while moving (not in an Activity of course).

    Any updates on this?

I've bought the FR 235, but I'm kinda disappointed. Comming frome a 100 EUR cheaper fitbit blaze, I really thought 24/7 HR measurements could not be that hard. If I would have known this, I would have gone for another model. (I am really happy with the device during running sessions though!)

I would be happy if the watch would sample once every 5 minutes. (And not once every 30 minutes during sleep..). RHR numbers are completely useless now. If it would be user configurable (Battery save (SMART), once every 5 minutes, once every minute).. Would make me happy. I really would not mind charging the device very 2 - 3 days.
  • this has improved on the 935/Fenix 5 due to the new HR hardware which is lower power.

When I first got the watch it sampled 24/7.
This was changed to save battery.

As you say there is no reason it couldn't be user configurable, but for whatever reason garmin aren't interested.
Would be nice to have an official response from garmin.

Was battery life so horrible back then? I wish that the firmware was open source. I would be happy to implement it for them :D.

No, about 3 days or so as I recall.
But the specs said longer so a few people complained.

Absolutely no reason it cannot be an option. And a bit naughty to take it away when people HD already purchased it.

Well, I would love the option to be able to choose method of determining RHR. When writing this post my HR shows 45. RHR set from sleeping is 57..

When using the watch only daytime I normally get a RHR 39-43.
