235 keeps "resetting" when an activity is chosen?

Hello all and thanks for your time...
I am on my 2nd 235 - first one froze up and was stuck on "Garmin" screen (as if just turned on). Garmin C/S tried all they could to help me over phone to no avail and had to send unit back after about 2 weeks of ownership. I rec'd my replacement early this week and seemed to be working fine until i went for my first run on it yesterday. When i select an activity (run, in this case), the watch goes thru normal functions, GPS ready etc., but then the watch seems to shut down and screen goes blank, "Garmin" then appears (of course i panic as this is what it was frozen on last time), and then after about 10 sec or so, it returns to the clock screen. If i immediately go back into the activity i can go forward with run etc. (simulated this a few times on Run and Run Indoors and seems to work, but always goes thru the process of "shutting down and restarting at clock screen"). Also when it does this, if i go to the activity tracker, HR (over past 4 hours) will disappear - not too big a deal but thinking this whole scenario is not correct. "Step" data seems to be maintained.
I tried plugging unit into my mac, and seeing if any thing on Garmin Express, but it sat for about 30 min on the loading settings screen before i gave up and disconnected device. I think i remember seeing a "Transfer Complete" or something like that when I initially went for that first run yesterday, but i wasn't paying a lot of attention to watch at that point as i just got outside and this is my first run since open heart surgery at end of October (so i was just excited to be outside again and not in cardiac rehab etc.).
Thanks again all and any advice is certainly greatly appreciated - hope everyone has a wonderful day!
  • Does not sound good.

So did you manage to connect the watch to Garmin Express to get it set up and if you see "Transfer Complete" is there anything in your Garmin Connect account?
If so can you see what software version it is running?

Sounds like might be prudent to reset the device. I would try a Hard Reset first where you hold down the power buttton for at least 15 secs before the watch powers off. Then you can turn it on again. If that does not improve things, try a master reset.
  • Thanks for the advice! Will give it a go (hard reset) and then master reset. Hopefully can get connected to express an see if can make some progress- if not will try c/s on Monday and see what they come up with. Hope won't be going on to my 3rd 235 in few weeks! Ha.
Thanks again and will update soon as some progress made.
  • Ok... little more info. was able to connect to Garmin Express / Connect on laptop.
    Running version 3.20
Did not see anything in Garmin Connect acct that showed needed sync'g. I've connected device and seems to tell me all up to date (according to Express screen). I've done the hard reset and still has same issue. I did remove my old 235 which looked to still be there (now show new device as Forerunner 235 (2) ).
Looks like a call to C/S on Monday morning will be next step. I've tried Run and Run Indoors again with pretty much same results - though at varying times. Once i just pushed the Activity button on side of watch and it immediately shut down to "Garmin" screen and other times I got all the way into a "run" and stopped work out and discarded it, before it went into shut down mode. It always seems to come back, but def worried one time it will not.
    Thanks again.
  • When you connect to a computer, can you see an ERR_LOG.TXT file at the top level?

If so can you post it here and will ask Garmin to have a look at it to try and see what might be going on.

I suspect Garmin Support will just exchange the device although seems rather bad luck to get 2 dud ones.
  • Man thank you so much for your on going assistance! Ok here's the info from ERR_LOG.TXT

No worries, the ERR_LOG.TXT further up should do. I've mentioned to this Garmin. Guess could be a few days before get any feedback however.
  • Are you using any Connect IQ data fields in your run? If so, you many want to remove them and see if it still crashes. If it doesn't maybe add them back one at a time, and see if the crash happens again.

Something going odd in a CIQ data field should result in a "IQ!" on the screen, but maybe there's a hole.
  • I haven't added anything from the connect IQ store as of yet. So everything on watch is what came from factory for sure. I have played with data fields - just configured them a bit (screen 1 and 2). Really just played around with what i think I want to see and where - changed screen 2 to 4 fields, and arranged each field.
And once again I really appreciate you guys taking time out of your day and looking into this for me - certainly no worries if it takes Garmin a few days to respond. The watch is functioning in a way - was able to do a couple hour run on treadmill and use accelerometer for first time (not bad, at least good enough for me - diff between treadmill and watch was only .13mi). It has at least not dropped out mid run - so that's a good sign! Just seems to do it only when going into that mode each time, but once comes back can go back in and do what ever workout with out issue.
Thanks again all and hope are having great day!
  • Just a quick update on this. Spoke with terribly nice girl today at Garmin C/S. She was in sure of my issue, but definitely not normal. She checked with other persons in tech support and no one seemed to come accross yet. We went ahead and added the 3.25 beta and so far I cannot seam to recreate my earlier problem of watch shutting down and 'resetting'. Completely unsure of the fix, but guessing a software bug(?) and the new beta seems (so far) to have corrected. Keeping fingers crossed and thanks all for taking a look!
