new 235

Hi,

I have never owned a running watch and purchased a 235 for my wife. Upon powering up and waiting 5 minutes outside in the open I never get more than the smallest bars blinking for GPS reception. I am assuming this is the issue that caused 50% of her run to not record and no mapping on connect of the route she ran? Can someone please shed some light on what is wrong? Neither of us are very tech savvy so all help is greatly appreciated. I'd really like for my wife to not get discouraged with this thing before she has a chance to actually use it.

    Ah that sort of explains it. That means the GPS firmware is either not installed or is somehow corrupt.
    I would try a master reset and, if still shows 0.00, reconnect it to Garmin Express to see if the software is downloaded.

    I fear however that the watch maybe broken and will need to be exchanged.

    I did a reset several times and have the same result. I also connected through garmin express a number of time w/o any change. I will return the unit for a refund and see if my wife even wants another. The experience has already soured her already data skeptical self. Thanks for the help TimGrose and TMK17.
  • That's rather unfortunate. Have reported this to Garmin. Will let you know if they have any other advice but a replacement/refund is your best bet I think.

    I would say that whilst I have heard of some Garmin watches having this problem from time to time it's not very common. Probably a hardware fault I think.
  • Just wanting to check that when you connected to Garmin Express did it offer anything to update? With GPS at 0.00 it ought to have offered you the correct one to install.

    This same exact situation happened to me. Brand new Garmin 235 only 6 days old. GPS firmware reads 0.00 Went though a few diagnostic checks with garmin customer service. No luck. Issue likely hardware related. Bought through Amazon and did a replacement for a new one. No hassle.
