Pairing Nightmares... Can't connect Magnet-Less Garmin Speed/Cadence Sensor.

So far I love this watch, but I find the process for pairing sensors very frustrating. I was finally able to pair my scosche rhythm HR monitor, but only by going to Recovery Advisor, trying to turn it on, and then getting a prompt to add HR monitor. It found it in seconds and everything was and continues to be fine (connects instantly every time). Now I'm trying to pair the magnet-less speed & cadence seniors from Garmin. My watch just won't pair. I may have bad speed/cadence sensors... but I find that hard to believe. Here's what I've tried so far.

1. Remove battery from each sensor for a minute... then replace (eliminate shipping mode, or so I read). I get the green/red then all green blinking, then it stops blinking.
2. Cleaned the grease of the battery and gold connector in sensor(s).
3. I'm sometimes able to get the cadence sensor to activate (flashing green LED's) by turing the crank a few times... but then my watch does nothing. No searching, just nothing. What screen should I be on to pair with (i've basically tried them all).
4. Replaced the battery.
5. Disconnected HR sensor and taken batteries out of other ANT+ sensors to eliminate possibility of interference (which sounds ridiculous to me).
6. I can never get the speed sensor to activate (flashing green LED's) by spinning the rear wheel on a trainer. Again, watch never attempts to search for any sensors... makes me feel like it isn't doing anything.

I find it very frustrating that there is no manual way to force the watch to search for ANT+ sensors. I assume it must just be doing it all the time, but there is no indication that it is. The manual is no help as it says to put the watch within 2 cm of the sensor. That's pretty difficult when the speed sensor is on the rear hub.

Has anyone had success pairing the speed/cadence sensor to their FR 230? I'm about to give up... it just doesn't want to work. Again maybe the problem is with the sensors themselves (I'll post a message there too)... but they are brand new. Thanks for any help.
  • Are you in the Sensors & Accessories section from a bike profile?

I managed to pair there, cycling slowly (so was emitting a signal) and holding my watch as close to the sensor as possible

I think I tried that... but I'll try again... thanks. Part of my problem I think is that the speed sensor doesn't ever even appear to activate (flashing green LED's with wheel turns). Did you have a problem with that? Did you pair both at once or try them separately?

    Thanks for your help.
  • It was a combined one on a Wattbike (indoor bike) so only one pairing was needed.
  • I have a similar problem with the foot pod!
  • Posted this on the 235 forum yesterday but relevant here as well...

I asked Garmin for some advice on pairing if you are having problems. It seems that the GSC 10 does not have to be first paired device. They said:

    # Remove all sensors from the paired list under Menu>Settings>Sensors and Accessories
    # Then go *back* to the Activity Profile selection page (where you see the activity profile icon and Activity & Menu with the up/down arrows)
    # While on this page, hold the device directly *over/on top* each sensor.
    # The device will pick up the HR, Foot Pod, GSC10 sensors while on this page

Keep in mind though, that the device will *not display* the icon for the GSC10 *if and only if* a Run profile is selected.
When swiping over to a Bike profile, the icons will appear. You will also notice that the 'Foot Pod' icon has now *disappeared*.

Thanks for your comments... I tried what you said but to no avail. I don't have the GSC-10, but the magnet-less version. I followed your instructions and no dice. It never attempts anything. That said, I think the sensors I have must be faulty because I never see them activated (flashing green led per the manual) after spinning the crank and wheel hub. I'm very disappointed that there at least isn't an option to force the FR230 to search for other ANT sensors. You can do it for the heartbeat sensor (albeit in a backdoor kind of way), why not for others? I can't pair my ANT+ heartbeat sensor unless I do it the manual way through Recovery Adviser. Then it pairs almost instantaneously every time. Garmin made something that should be so simple nearly impossible.
  • Do you have access to any other Garmin fitness devices to see if your sensors pair with those?

Also something is wrong if you have go through Recovery Advisor each time to pair a HR strap from scratch each time. Once paired it should pick it up again automatically.

I have read reports here of people having big problems pairing, like you, with one device but a like for like replacement was fine. It maybe pointing to the fact that there is something wrong with your one.

Sorry, only the initial pairing of the HR monitor requires going through recovery adviser. After that it always pairs automatically upon entering an activity. My point was that I couldn't initially pair the HR monitor without "manually" going through Recovery Advisor. It should just pair automatically on the "Run" activity screen, correct? The fact that it won't pair initially without manually searching through Recovery Advisor gives me little hope that my watch will "automatically" pair any other ANT+ sensors initially. Given that there is no way to manually search for speed and cadence sensors... I guess I'm out of luck with this otherwise fantastic watch.
  • Well in my notes above the first step was
    # Remove all sensors from the paired list under Menu>Settings>Sensors and Accessories

    Have you tried that?

If you are trying to pair bike sensors, then have you tried being on the Bike (or Bike Indoor) selection page (or in Sensors & Accessories from the menu from there)?

Thanks Tim... I tried removing all first. I think it was the watch. I returned it and bought a 920xt... I was able to pair the sensors immediately.
