Feature Requests and Suggested Improvements

Okay, completed my first run with my new Forerunner 235 and I'll start off with the following:

Speed Source from Foot Pod on outdoor runs please!

This would be a great addition to the watch. It was a nice improvement on the 920xt and the 235 could definitely stand to have the same feature.
  • Auto-lap vs intervals

A simple one: add an option to disable auto-lap function when running a training program/interval set. This was built-in the FR 610 (you had no choice, it's how it behaved), with the 230/235 the only way to do this is to manually turn off auto-lap before selecting and starting a training program (and only before, since the control is not accessible once the activity is started).

Don't know if this has been suggested already, I want one more setting for Optical Heart Rate Monitor, instead of only Off and Auto I also want a setting On Only During Activity.
  • I would like to have an option to make the optical heart rate monitor working reliably , even during intervals
I must say, with the previous firmware announcement : an improvement was expected, but it's not improved at all... I gave it a fair shot though.
Maybe the only 'improvement' is in the HR widget, the heart icon has turned red :p

Seriously, will Garmin ever be able to fix the optical HR issues with current hardware?
Does garmin need help gathering data from runners, testing betas, capturing both optical and strap data ...... anything I could do to help I would...

    heartrate share

There was an in a previous firmware version an option On Off which worked well unindepended from starting an Activity

    Useless notification: "Transfer complete"

I fail to see the information value in the "Transfer complete" popup and the related beep pretty much every time I press the Start button. It's annoying and actually prohibits me e.g. from checking my training log at night as it would wake up my wife. Please remove it or at least make it silent.

(Yes, I know I could turn off the alert tones temporarily, but that's not a solution.)
  • Please give more granularity for Run / Walk alert settings

Based on the advice of a Garmin Rep at my local running store, I started using the "Run / Walk" alerts on my run instead of intervals. (the main difference being, I can get mile split times, and can see how much time is left in each set) The only issue I have is that I can only set the run or walk periods in 15 second intervals, either 00, 15, 30, or 45. The other alerts (e.g. Eat, Drink, etc.) allow me to pick any time in seconds. I'd like the same for the run/walk, or at the very least, give 5 second interval choices instead of 15 seconds. Yes, it actually does make a difference for me (and perhaps other followers of Jeff Galloway). Thanks for any consideration.

It would be nice to have the option when creating a workout to use/not use auto-laps. Then the watch changes back to the previous setting once the workout is complete.

Separating toggles for alert tones would be nice too. I don't want notification tones while at work but do like alert tones for workouts.
  • Not being able to dismiss alarms while the device is locked bugs me. Is that by design or an oversight?

Backlight settings bug me, I enabled always on because I want to be able to turn it on permanently at the start of runs in low light. However if I also want it for keys & alerts (or wrist turn), this means that one press or alert (or wrist turn) also turns it on permanently for runs in daylight. And it's sufficiently buried in menus that changing this behaviour per run is a chore.

    +1 for this

I stopped using auto-laps all together because If I forget to turn it off and I load a workout like 1600 m repeats and I have autolap at 1000m it will split my laps in 1000m +600m. It would be nice if autolap could be disabled when I load a workout from garmin connect

    Support UTF-8 for notification

I am wondering how hard it is to add utf-8 support for phone notification? For 235, different countries may have different firmware. Why can not you create one firmware to support UTF-8 and use different resource bundle for different countries?
