Feature Requests and Suggested Improvements

Okay, completed my first run with my new Forerunner 235 and I'll start off with the following:

Speed Source from Foot Pod on outdoor runs please!

This would be a great addition to the watch. It was a nice improvement on the 920xt and the 235 could definitely stand to have the same feature.
  • Walk activity profile, please!

Even runners walk, and would like to track those activities.

Walking with the run profile and editing later is tedious, but if this is not done then running trends are adversely affected by slower walks.

Please add a Walk activity profile to the watch, this should be as simple as duplicating the Run profile, with a different activity type written to the FIT file...

With this app you can record both hiking as well as outdoor walking, and they are labeled correctly in the .fit (and has a few features you won't see in a native app!)

Many things are achievable by today's technology, irrespective of whether or not the required modules have been implemented in a product that has already been on the market for most of a year.

Asking for a paradigm shift and making the Forerunner‑235 a real-time data feed and user interface for the Garmin Connect service (or as some users would prefer, bypassing the connectivity requirement altogether by having the Garmin Connect Mobile app perform analytics locally and report results immediately) while tracking an activity is simply not going to happen before the model is superseded – on that I'd happily wager the price of a Forerunner‑245, against someone who's prepared to cough up that amount for my benefit should my guess proves correct by the time the FR245 is available for purchase.

Are we requesting features and suggesting improvements for the FR235, or just what we'd like to see in its successor and for which we'll be prepared to upgrade our Garmin devices at a premium?

My question is this, when the GCM app alerts you with audio on the current pace or heart rate, isn't that a real time data feed? It is not continuous, i will give you that, but it is real time at the moment. Does it send the data to the server before reading out to you?
And an answer to your question, i am suffesting improvements for the fr235, if it is technically unachievable, i will be happy to withdraw them, but somebody has to explain to me why. I am pretty savvy with technlology and i do understand how the bluetooth module in the fr235 works. I also understand how an app can work. Still happy to be proven wrong.

    Trail Running Activity

    Hi Everyone

i have had my watch for 3 months now and have to say i love it and have been lurking on the forums for a while.

i was wondering would you be able to add a TRAIL RUN activity to watch. Reason for this is, i do road running and trial running and have different pairs of shoes for these activities and would like to track the mileage i do on the different pairs without having to actually go in and select the pair i will be using.

would this be possible to add? is there such a feature already?
  • It is not continuous, i will give you that, but it is real time at the moment.
Not only is it not continuous, I'm confident the watch does not send every data value over Bluetooth as soon as it is known to the application in the FR235's firmware. I'll be happy to concede it qualifies as a real-time data feed if, with one-second data recording enabled on the FR235, the Garmin Connect Mobile app receives an update every second for even just one of current heart rate, GPS position, pace, and other tracked metrics.

As for allowing/enabling the watch to be a real-time user interface for the GCM app, capable of generating interrupts and triggering responses on demand (e.g. when the user double-taps), the FR235 certainly does not do that while tracking activities. Arguably, the only time the app responds to a user action on the watch in when the user selects Sync Now in the Controls widget.

Does it send the data to the server before reading out to you?
I don't know, but I'd be glad to test it out.

And my point is that there is no commercial reason for Garmin to enhance the capabilities and features of the FR235, irrespectively of whether it's technically achievable; the latter is only a secondary concern. There is no promise (or obligation) to help product owners fully exploit the hardware they have already purchased, and enhance the value proposition post-sale, by continuing to invest in software development. On the other hand, good ideas (suggested by current product owners or otherwise) can be implemented in later models to highlight the differences and provide impetus for current product owners to spend money and upgrade.
  • i was wondering would you be able to add a TRAIL RUN activity to watch.
No, the FR235 does not support custom activity profiles. However, you may be able to develop (or commission someone else to develop) and install a Connect‑IQ app that will record an activity in a FIT file that identifies the activity as Trail Running, as opposed to generic Running.

Reason for this is, i do road running and trial running and have different pairs of shoes for these activities and would like to track the mileage i do on the different pairs without having to actually go in and select the pair i will be using.
I don't think that's possible, because the default gear assignment rules in Garmin Connect (as it stands) will not allow you to create a separate rule for Trail Running.

I disagree with what your saying. For example : enable audio prompts in GCM and press the lap button. If you press the button the laptime will be anounced (and HR and speed)
To me this looks like generating interrupts and triggering responses on demand.

    • Vibration alert length (eg. normal, long or extra long)
    • No alerts/notifications while in sleep hours (on/off, set sleep hours from profile)
    • Extra configurable data screen (instead of heart rate on/off)
    • Disable lap button (or double press option)

    Cadence for paddlers

It would be great if the Paddle activity was able to access Cadence as a parameter to put in the display. Lots of us now use cadence monitors but we have to use the Bike activity to allow us to set this as a field on the Display. Of course there is every chance I am just being thick and not looking at the Settings properly !

The no alerts/notifications while in sleep hours is already an option (unless i am not understanding?), go into 'Settings' and then 'Do not disturb' and turn on 'Sleep Time'
