Feature Requests and Suggested Improvements

Okay, completed my first run with my new Forerunner 235 and I'll start off with the following:

Speed Source from Foot Pod on outdoor runs please!

This would be a great addition to the watch. It was a nice improvement on the 920xt and the 235 could definitely stand to have the same feature.

Firstly Garmin should fix the OHR problem what we got with 4.20 version...!

There was not any problem before 4.20 and 4.30 update.

Maybe an update rollback would be good (e.g. back to 4.10).

    manually enter the sleep mode

I am happy user of 235 for only 2 days ago, but... I realised – that with this automatic sleep feature it's not possible to manually enter the sleep mode. there is no nap mode either. (but still on the Connect page we can see +nap e.g…) my sleep pattern consists with regular afternoon nap because I don’t sleep a lot during the night. in this way the sleep statistics (without counting the naps) aren’t real at all :( I suppose that adding a manual sleep mode wouldn't be a great deal for you... thanks.
  • Auto-pause kicking in when starting to run

I'm running/cycling with auto pause enabled. Each time I start running, the watch enters auto pause, and then after a second or two, it starts again.

Had this problem this morning. Auto-pause (which I had forgotten was on) kicked in when I started, and also after a manual pause for a red light. I ended up disabling auto-pause completely for running, but I guess you could also lower the speed threshold. There are 3 settings: "When stopped" = auto-set, "Custom" = you set a speed threshold, and "Disabled" = off. Presumably (but without testing it) if you go "Custom" and select a lower speed the problem will not be as visible.
  • What temperature unit have you got your device set to? Settings, System, Units.

Thank you! - I had completely missed this, thinking that temperature had been set to imperial alongside miles.

Easy way to greatly improve sleep tracking

    Current logic (Very dumb assumption):

If no motion, owner is asleep (deep sleep).

Far superior logic (you already have the data):

If no motion AND no heart beat, the owner is not wearing the watch, or is dead but is CERTAINLY NOT ASLEEP. Maybe the device is being charged. Who knows.
  • Your proposed logic for deducing that the user is not asleep is patently flawed

If no motion AND no heart beat, the owner is not wearing the watch, or is dead but is CERTAINLY NOT ASLEEP.
That logic is demonstrably flawed. On multiple occasions, I've left my FR235 charging overnight while I slept.

    Title

If there is no pulse, the owner is not wearing the watch, or is dead.

That covers it. If you're not wearing the watch, the watch shouldn't take guesses about what you're up to. Even if you are sleeping, funny guy.
  • If you're not wearing the watch, the watch shouldn't take guesses about what you're up to.
You're presuming that, as a user, you have (or ought to be accorded) a level of control of when, or under which circumstances, a 24×7 activity tracking system (including the device you wear, and the cloud-based service to which it connects) will make assertions about your activity, energy consumption, etc. on the whole, when in fact you don't have that control and are in no position to decide for yourself.

Perhaps giving you a choice that you don't actually have today is the feature request you should be making, instead of presuming to ‘correct’ the logic currently employed.
  • SMUG.... wtf, please try to refrain from posting in this section (or most...)... you 'presume' your 'logical' opinion comments are somehow useful or needed. Your constant badgering of peoples ideas on how the product could be improved (here and elsewhere)... we get it... you don't like peoples ideas or at the very least how they post/state them... or that somehow peoples thoughts/opinions on how their (watch owners...and Garmin) 300-400$ watches should operate.... is your business...

Keep to your technical assistance posts - they are often well researched, thoughtout, and instructional - all though still douchey most of the time... ha

    TGIF :)

They're posting them in an open discussion forum (as opposed to, say, their own blogs or Facebook pages), so one must assume they intend to elicit responses – not just help, support or sympathy, but discussion – from fellow members, who are not all like-minded folk that share the same values or concerns. I participate here as a fellow consumer and Garmin customer, and their equal in standing (as opposed to being superior or inferior), giving them my views in response.

Thank you. However, this forum is not a solely/primarily a channel to either obtain service and support, or provide it, from one user to another. I'm not going to restrict my view and participation to just what may contribute to others achieving their desired outcomes; that's not the driving force of discussion, in my view, but differences in viewpoints and differences in the information known to individuals. Sameness and solidarity is not what I'm here to celebrate.

all though still douchey most of the time... ha
The last thing I ‘need’ when posting well-researched, thought-out and instructional information is to expend effort couching it in such tones and wording to ensure readers find it amenable; it's entirely up to them to decide whether to extract value from it for themselves or reject it, after I put it out there.
