Feature Requests and Suggested Improvements

Okay, completed my first run with my new Forerunner 235 and I'll start off with the following:

Speed Source from Foot Pod on outdoor runs please!

This would be a great addition to the watch. It was a nice improvement on the 920xt and the 235 could definitely stand to have the same feature.

Why is that? Seems to make a big difference on smartphones. Do you have any data on this? Also on HRM on/off vs battery life? Or Backlight display on/off vs battery life? GPS? Any other critical settings that significantly affect battery life on this device?

If Bluetooth is on and there is a connection with a phone, battery usage will be minimal. If Bluetooth is on, and the watch is searching to connect to a phone, or it keeps dropping and reconnecting, it will use a lot of battery in this process. My son is a tech for a cell phone company. He used the analogy of battery usage for Bluetooth like gas usage in a vehicle. It uses more gas starting the engine than it does once it's started and idling.
  • ...or it keeps dropping and reconnecting,

...especially if the connection alert is on and has to vibrate

Other factors are the number of notifications you get and if the phone beeps, vibrates and/or the backlight comes on for each. Turning off BT will of course take away these non-trivial sources of battery drain as well. Most of the battery savings probably come from these and not holding the BT connection itself.

It's also useful to define what you consider a significant difference in battery usage. If the battery drain goes from 10% per day to 8% per day it will amount to an extra day (or more) of battery life before needing to charge again. Since notifications and fancy widgets are less important to me i'm testing this now to see how much i can get.
  • Footpod Auto Calibration

It isn't working, and it is in the manual. Please fix this, ricky tick!
  • I like the auto backlight on wrist turn when running at night in the dark. However during the day, when at the office, etc, it annoys me very much. I would love an option that enables it only during sport activities.

While the watch is locked you should still be able to dismiss notifications and turn off alarms. Certainly alarms; makes no sense that you both have to unlock the watch and then turn it off. And annoying at 6am in the morning!
  • Make cadence measurement optional. At least the those who aren't really interested it will not experience the cadence lock issue. Would it also save battery life? Just a thought.

Cadence lock has nothing to do with the watch measuring cadence. Turning off the measurement would have no impact (though it would make it harder for you to analyze whether you had cadence lock or not :) Cadence lock happens because your step/arm motion is causing the watch to move and changing the amount of light that gets in or even just shifting the placement on your skin which messes up the measurement - the optical sensor picks those changes up as a heartbeat. The people have complained that it always locks cadence have some sort of problem with their arm swing motion or the jolt from their foot hitting the ground that is causing the issue for them. Most can resolve the issue by tightening the watch to the extreme. I have noticed that when my I twist my arm away from me, it causes the watch to shift and sometimes even lifts the sensor off my skin from the way my muscles contort, which almost certainly will cause full cadence lock or a complete dropout of HR altogether.

    More please:

    1. Improvement for the audio notifications for at least every end-of-lap. Meanwhile with my Android nothing is heard..
    2. Hebrew notifications from the cellular phone (I know that older "ForeRunner"s had got an update for hebrew. Thanks!
    3. Updating the weather widget so the Precipitation (rain etc.) can be known (as forecast) for all users .. Maybe updating also the MitusCast Widget for more countries.. It's useful!

    Thanks.

Thanks. FWIW, I've my experience of cadence lock has been most noticeable when running on rolling terrain, usually on the downhill, but sometimes on the uphill too e.g running along at cadence 180, HR 145, the climb the hill (HR rises to say 165, cadence drops to 165 or so which is what I would expect), then on the way downhill the cadence rises again, but the HR also rise instead of dropping i.e. it os now locked to the cadence. To rectify this I have to stop dead. HR rapidly drops and when I start running again the problem is gone. This is not an ideal situation.

    Agreed!
