Heart rate monitor LEDs are always on?

Just received my Forerunner 235. Haven't run with it yet. That will happen tomorrow afternoon. I won't use it as an activity tracker, only for running. So I turned off the activity tracking. But the heart rate monitor LEDs are always on. The watch is sitting on a table and the LEDs are shining bright. Why?

Is there a setting so the LEDs are only on when I'm doing an activity, or at least when I'm actually wearing the watch? Seems kind of obvious to me.

UPDATE: The LEDs go off when the watch is sitting still for a while. I tried setting it face down and saw them go off. So all is well. Really liking the 235 so far after almost several months of use.

I have the same issue, which drains the battery in 5 hours or so. Only way to turn them off is manually through the menus. I thought it was supposed to sample HR at certain intervals when set to "auto"

    Were you able to solve?
  • Mine doesn't exhibit that behavior. When I take it off and lay it on the table the leds shut off.
