Stride Length

Hi,

Is there any setting to setup stride length? Or does the FR235 set this automatically based on collected activity data with gps?

And does the device distinguish between walking (activity/step tracking) and running (e.g. "run indoors")?

EDIT: I just did two "run indoors", but just walking once up and then down the street. In GC it shows different stride length for those two "runs". First 0.64m and on the second 0.69. So, this is without gps, so my assumption was, that stride lenght (based on which distance is estimated) would be the same. How come they are different?

Thanks
phil

Can't you set both walking and running stride length in Garmin Connect. This will then sync with your device.
  • Well I can't find it in GC (website). I can't use the app currently since I'm still on iOS 7 and from past experience I am VERY reluctant to upgrade older apple devices to newer iOS. I will have to if I keep the FR235...

But what I still don't get is how two seperate indoor runs (both walking thus with similar cadence) can have different stride lengths. I could only imagine that based on cadence the base stride length is somehow being interpolated. No idea though, could be a bug as well?
  • Had some time for a walk... What I did was walking "segments" of 500m in three different paces (slow, normal, brisk). First I recorded 3 walks with GPS. Then I headed back the same route recording in "run indoor" mode. I also carried a 1$-pedometer as well as my iPhone with some step counting apps.

Estimated distance and pace was good for normal and fast walking. When walking slowly, the FR was way off, propably due to very restricted arm movement.

For the GPS walks, I suppose the FR/GC just calculates the avg. stride length based on steps and distance. However I don't get exaclty the same when calculating 500m/steps.

For "indoor run" I don't know what the default stride length is or if the FR can adapt stride length based on stride frequency measured. As you can see, the avg stride length is different for the different paces I walked. So I do assume the FR does either extrapolate the default stride lenght to adapt to the stride frequency. Or, It does collect stride length data for different paces when GPS is on and keeps that for use with "indoor run".

Fyi: I have not set up manually any stride length in GC.
