Can GPS be turned off when recording an activity?

I understand that the FR235 is geared for running. I recently purchased the VSHR and love it except for the fact that it can't be paired with a chest strap for a more accurate heart rate reading. I was thinking about purchasing the FR235 to have the capability to record steps, calories, sleep, and the ability to have 27/7 heart rate readings like the VSHR, but I would like to use a chest strap when I record workouts. I do more cross fit type workouts than run. When I do these sort of workouts, can I turn off the GPS feature when connected to a chest strap to save battery life?

Wow! I downloaded the manual earlier today and completely missed that. Thanks!
  • Bumping this thread. With 3.20, I have turned off GPS for the Other activity, yet it still records GPS data. Has anyone else experienced this? I think with the GPS recording, it screwed up my calories as it thought I was not running very far/fast. In reality, I was doing a bunch of wallballs and burpees.

You can see the GPS recording here

I double checked and GPS is turned off for the Other activity.

Yes, have been having that BUG almost since I got the watch. The first indoor run was recorded without GPS, then it just started to record GPS for all my indoor activities. This is starting to be really annoying, it also drains more battery like that than it should

When I say "NO GPS", I mean "NO GPS"! Haha. It is annoying. I don't remember it happening with 3.10 software. Hmmmm. I installed GymTimer from ConnectIQ. Maybe I'll try using that app on my next CrossFit session. I have been connecting a chest strap to make sure I get better HR data. I still like the 235 for all day HR and resting HR before someone suggests that I get the 230. :p
  • Why not sending Garmin an Email about this GPS bug?

I just did, and the more people complain the faster I hope this annoying bug gets fixed!

Good you were using a chest strap for crossfit :)
  • This is a known issue and understand is being addressed.

    For now the workaround is:

Select a GPS ON profile in the profile menu and make active, then select your non-GPS profile and make active. At that point GPS will be off for activities.

Don't get too excited about all day HR and resting HR with the 235. Latest update changed the HR sample rates to anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes between times. It's just random. Which means resting heart will be off.

This is a bit confusing for me. I tried to use the "other" workout option and turn off the gps in the activity settings of the "other" profile. Soon after I started the workout, the power save feature started coming on. I hit the back button to ignore it but in the end it only recorded a 12 second workout.

This was for a weight training session btw.
  • Offhand that sounds like you paused the workout somehow.
