Charging 230... to 100%?

so...this morning is only my second charge up of my 230, but i have been meaning to write about something i observed when i charged it the first time...

when i charged it out of the box, i recalled, it going from something like 94% to 100% pretty rapidly on the watch face. yet, when i disconnected it, and had, at the time, a digital watch face with percentage charge on it, it showed something like 96%. (i.e., i think what is displayed by the watch when connected to the charger is erroneous)

i can only guess that the Garmin does some sort of trickle charge when it hits around 95% which may require an hour or so to get to 100%. does anyone know what this duration is/should be?

thanks!

btw, does anyone else LOVE this new charging/data cable relative to prior FR watches? i do! this one is so much easier and reliable to connect compared to my FR220 and FR210 (the latter was awful!)

my own follow-up: after leaving it at "100%" for about an hour and a half, after disconnect, a detailed watch face shows the charge at 98%. i guess either the trickle charge is really slow, or else it shows the capacity compared with the original battery design capacity. not a huge deal, but surprising that i can't get it to 100%
  • The exact same experience here with 96% being the value on a watch face after it showed 100% while connected.
  • 230 battery life

I charged it overnight and it will only go to 97%. I am only getting little over 2 weeks with AT and BT notifications on, no where near the 5 weeks. I beginning to suspect there is something wrong with my 230.
  • battery life

thanks for the link. That would explain why it would drop from 100% to say maybe 99% or even may be 98%. But When I charge it for 6 hours it shouldn't drop 4% battery life in 6 hours. That would equate to a drop of 16% over a day which is really high.
  • sadly, i've only taken 3 runs with my 230 in what must be close to a month :\ (the cold that never ends or likely what has been 2-3 colds)

anyway, this gave me the opportunity to see what kind of "background" battery life i could get.

in 15 days, and 1 40 minute run, it went from fully charged (or 98%) to 49%. that is with activity tracker on, using the Pointer Analog face, and only phone call notifications sent to the watch (i don't get too many).

i think 5 weeks would be possible in the most ideal circumstances, but probably not realized in real life. i hope that once i get back my usual active schedule, i can get 2 weeks without any battery anxiety.
  • How long does 0% last?

No one can charge to 100%, and if you could, it drops immediately.
But I have now seen my watch was on 0% since I woke up and still at 17:15 it hasn't died yet.

It has been connected to mobile phone and vibrated a lot for notifications.

Seems like it makes up for the inability to charge to 100%

But in my opinion the percentages are misaligned and should be better calibrated.

    Never saw 0%.

It worked some time on 1% when I first discharged it to that level.
Now it dies pretty fast on this last 1-2 percent.

I don't know how garmin does, but cellphones do autocalubration storing information (Volts -> percent) in a separate time.
So I'd try to run couple of charge/ discharge cycles.

I forgot to indicate that this is seen on a ConnectIQ watchface.
There is a difference between the Garmin watchface battery level and the one reported in ConnectIQ.
  • With Connect IQ watchfaces on the 23x and 630, the don't get the decimal portion of the battery level, but they do on other devices.

So what happens is that when the battery level drops to 99.999999, CIQ sees it as 99.000000, and there is no way to round it up (this doesn't take long..) (I saw the elusive "100%" for the first time today, and it lasted maybe 15 seconds!)

and on the other end, when the level is 0.999999, CIQ sees it as 0.0000000 - even though almost 1% is left.

When charging, once it hits 100%, charging actually stops until until it drops a bit (99 or 98%?) to avoid over charging, but still displays 100%, so when you unplug, you rarely (if ever) will see 100% for both of these reasons.

Also, the way level is calculated could differ a bit based on charging vs while in use. (one could be looking at current and the other voltage, for example)
