That was unexpected...

I just got my 235, so wanted to take it for a test spin and comparison. I put my Garmin HR strap on to use with my Galaxy S5 and Endomondo like I usually do, and had the FR235 on. I never paired the HR strap with the FR235. However, it apparently picked it up and used that! So much for that comparison. Are pairings between Garmin devices automatic? Some discussion about pairing the FRs with a footpad (either here or on DCRainmaker) had me think it wasn't automatic, and not necessarily easy either.

By the way, newbie here on the Garmin Running/Forerunner part of the forums. I might have had some posts in the old Geocaching section, can't even remember for sure now. Hi! ;-)
  • HR strap pairing tends to be automatic now on the latest Garmin devices. If you don't want to use it with a 235 (say for a test) should be able to disable it in Settings, Sensors & Accessories.
I believe if you pair a strap then it uses it in preference to the optical HR which is logical as, in normal use, why wear a strap if you don't want to use it and should be more accurate anyway.
  • Thanks.

Normally you'd be right "why wear a strap if you don't want to use it..." but in this case I was going to do a comparison. No harm done, I'll remember that for next time. I still have a lot to learn about the watch so I'm sure I'll be posting more questions in the forum. Is there a "Stupid newbie questions" section? :-D Heck, I had to call Garmin support because I couldn't find the "menu->settings" when setting up my watch... turned out I first needed to select a profile, THEN go to the menu->setting. I was trying to do it from the initial clock screen.
  • No question is stupid if you don't know the answer! Feel free to ask whatever you like. Would welcome your experiences as well especially how is the optical HR for you - well when you can get that!

Because maybe your not. Maybe it's your running partners.
  • Actually that's a good point about somebody's else strap.

I wonder if that is why the initial pairing range is short on the 230/235/630 to try and prevent you picking up somebody else's strap by mistake...
  • That happened to me with my wife's FR25 (which paired to my HRM). That's more of an issue as the FR25 doesn't allow you to unpair a sensor without a hard reset :-S

  • Ugh. I hope no one is wearing a strap at tomorrow's Turkey Trot! :-)
  • Just don't get too close to anyone! ;-D

I had the same problem (FR 235 and Fenix 3).
Hopefully this is corrected in the first software update. very annoying !!
