Hiking with the FR 235?

Hi all, first post on here

I'm planing on buying a running watch very soon, possibly for christmas and I have just found out from school I'll be walking the Kokoda trail in PNG. I currently use my Edge 510(I'm a cyclist) to track al of my running which hasn't been a problem but I would like the ease of having my gps on my wrist, along with optical HR, as I can find the HR strap a little restrictive.

I just wonder about the logistics of using the FR235 as a hike watch, as I'll only need it to track what I've done, I'll be guided the whole way. From my understanding, we will have power at many camp sites, so I guess it's just about whether the watch could store 7 days of 8 hour+ hikes on GPS mode, or would I be better off using the activity tracker instead?

I'd like the FR235 purely for my running, so if I can use this for my hike, it's just a bonus I guess. Thanks in advance
  • Should be OK - just about. Specifications in the manual http://static.garmin.com/pumac/Forerunner_230_OM_EN.pdf suggest up to 11 hours with optical HR on and recording an activity in GPS only mode (i.e. with GLONASS turned off - 9 hours with it on.)

You can charge these units on the go however so suggest take a portable battery charger with you in case the 8 hours stretches out further.

Plenty of room to store a week's worth of activities and if you run out of room it will just overwrite older activities on there.
  • Yep, shouldn't be a problem, since you'll be walking (even ok for running) you can set it to "smart GPS recording" to save on storage memory.

In fact the Forerunners are great to record tracks as you can start/lap/stop them when you want. It's much less convenient with a hiking GPS where there are no such buttons and you have to trim them when you get it home, a big chore ;-)
