Edge 1000

Hi,

where is the english forum for the Edge 1000?

The german forums have a legacy branch containing such old devices. The english forums apparently do not have such a thing? Where can I post questions concerning the edge 1000?

  • It's very annoying that the legacy edge 1000 hasn't been migrated across yet.  It is still a popular device used by many people

They have said many times, they will do. But I don't believe it. They do not care a cent for us

  • It will not be reinstated.  At least if the past is any indication.  As Garmin moves new products in, they shut down the old forums and prevent access.  That's the way its happened over the last decade or so.

Why does Garmin do this?  These forums cost them almost nothing except bandwidth.  They don't staff the forums for the most part.  Looks like a marketing ploy to push consumers to their new stuff, nothing more.

  • - This seems like a dismal outlook. We are still working on adding the Edge 1000 forums. I apologize for the confusion and inconvenience.

    - If you have an issue with the Edge 1000, please post it in the Edge 1030 group and we will do our best to answer your questions. When the new forum for the Edge 1000 is added we can move the threads to their appropriate groups.

Hi.  I have the Edge 1000. Used navigation this morning to ride from West London into the City. It took me via an unsafe route which seemed to be off-course.  Without the Garmin I was following a decent path which was safer and quicker - Garmin took me on very busy roads, a route that a navigation system would provide for cars not road bikes.  Can you suggest if there are any settings that I need to update/ change and what these are and how I do this in the device as the booklet that came in the box with the device is kind of useless in this space. Thanks.

  • I'm on the Edge 1030 now, but there are settings to avoid major highways, toll roads, unpaved roads, ferries, and narrow trails.  As I recall, these settings are on the 100 as well.  I get to them by entering a profile, then choosing Navigation > Routing > Avoidance Setup.

  • I generally would not trust the device to find me a bike friendly route.  In theory, you could have Popularity Routing set On and the device *should* use the Garmin database to determine what roads are OK for cycling, based on the concept that other riders have ridden certain roads.  That supposes that the roads were OK for cycling, which isn’t guaranteed.

As well, with automotive GPS, the map makers often have actual people in the field testing roads and routes, that in turn gives the database in the maps some guidance as to route suggestion.  And some maps (Google) actually gate data from phones running Google maps to generate traffic patterns, that in turn can generate route suggestions.

Cycling units do none of that, so and IMO, the Routing by the device is hit and miss and usually miss.

Which is why I am always generating routes/courses in an online systems such as Garmin Connect, or more recently in RideWithGPS, as it’s an easy download to the device using the iQ Connect app.  I’ll also look on street view to attempt to determine the quality of the route, available shoulders, etc...
