Total Ascent fifferences. Edge Explore vs Edge Explore 2.

I have Edge Explore and my wife has the new version 2. On the same ride why is the total ascent so different, some instances by over 300 metres?

The Edge Explore 2 has a barometric altimeter. The Edge Explore doesn't.
