US Maps disappeared after a map software update. Here's what I did to resolve. Now have questions.

After a recent maps update all of my US maps disappeared on Garmin Edge. I tried everything I could find on the internet to resolve. 1. Tried to reinstall. Error saying not enough space on device. 2. Deleted maps and associated files using Windows. Reinstalled maps. Still no map on device. 3. Factory reset, nope, no maps.

As a last ditch effort at 3 am, I purchased the Garmin Cycle Map North America ($19.99) from their maps purchase web page. Again deleted all maps and installed purchase using Garmin Express. Well this worked. I have maps back on device!

My questions are: 1. Are these the same maps that came preinstalled on my US device? And 2, will they update?

Thank you for any help or comments.. I am frustrated that I had to spend 20 USD to resolve on top of the fact that this is the second device Garmin has replaced. I also have the screen freeze issue which is an ongoing problem, but that's another rant for another day!

  • My questions are: 1. Are these the same maps that came preinstalled on my US device? And 2, will they update?

Yes, they should be the same (or very close). These are all based on Openstreetmap.

As far as understand, you don’t get updates for the maps you buy. I have no idea why (since you get updates for the maps that come with the device). This is why I recommend people use the free sources for secondary maps.

You should be able to install (and update) the maps that come with the device through Garmin Express (even after deleting them).

Are you using Windows or Apple?

    Did you try calling Garmin?

  • It's regrettable that you're out of pocket trying to restore your Edge Explore. Given the time and energy you already spent troubleshooting the device, spending money on it is just insult to injury.

Strictly for reference, there was recourse to install various maps (smaller, user specified regional maps too), all gratis. I did so a while back without difficulty. The instructions are available here at DC Rainmaker's website. Some of the links appear broken now so I'm not sure if the service is still available.

For what it's worth I've resolved that if my Edge requires further technical intervention, that's it, it's done; I'm cutting my losses and shopping for another GPS unit. No, it won't be a Garmin. I've reconciled myself to the Edge Explore being a dud and not worth further effort.

  • The following is one source for maps.

    https://garmin.bbbike.org/

Make sure you pick a Latin version (utf-8 won’t work).

  • Yes, I was angry at spending the money! But I was  at the point I was going to ditch the device and purchase a Wahoo. So I guess I saved money looking at it from that perspective. I won't be purchasing another Garmin unit for sure! Pretty much the only thing that stops me is the money I also have invested in my K-Edge attachment and my Trek Blendr.

I will definitely take a look at DC Rainmaker. I've heard of them but haven't investigated yet.

  • Thank you...will definitely look at!

  • Checked out DC Rainmaker. It now redirects to BBBike. I downloaded a cycling map for future use if necessary.
