edge explore topo pro map upload

Hello, I'm thinking to upgrade from edge800 to edge explore, mainly because of bigger screen. The most important function for me is to be able to upload topo map and routed on pc tracks. I have topo map which i got with edge 800. Edge explore doesn't have memory card slot but 16GB capacity memory.

Is it possible to upload the map i have on pc or memory card? How could this be done? I asked garmin support but i haven't got clear answer. Will it be possible to upload tracks from PC / base camp?

Thx for feedback

  • Commercial maps are usually device-locked, so it might not be possible to transfer the maps to another device. However, it it's an unlocked map, then it's sufficient to copy the proper img files into the GARMIN directory on the edge's storage.

Also, please note that the edge explore comes with cycling maps for the region you bough it in, so perhaps it won't be necessary to copy any maps at all.

  • Hello, thx for feedback. Ok so I guess i will give it try and buy edge explore. I know that basic maps are there but i use the device mainly for MTB so I need precise topo map with all the mountain tracks and mountain features.

Do i understand right that i will be able to upload the topo map from my pc to the device and i will not need to upload it to some garmin depository and manage it there? Currently for edge 800 i use base camp software where i display topo map and plan the track then i upload the track to the device. The micro card with topo map is inserted into the device. With edge explore i will need to upload the map to the device and the rest will be like with edge 800, right? Thx, Grzegorz

  • You can copy the map directly to the device, and it should work if it is not device-locked. If it is device-locked, then there is no way of tranfering it to another device.
