What does the AUTO light mode actually do on a Edge Explore?

I have the Garmin Edge Explore and the Varia front and Rear/radar lights. In the light network settings under 'Light Mode' there is an AUTO setting. What does it do? It doesn't have an ambient light sensor or take any info from sunset/sunrise times so what exactly is that setting doing? If it doesn't do anything then why is it there?

I personally think all the options in this 'Light Mode' setting are a bit pointless, more useful would be 'Day' and 'Night' but auto?, Trail, high visibility and individual is what we have.
